Yukon Pack ??

Hey all,

I've been watching that Alaska wilderness experiment show on the TV.

The participants all use 'Yukon Packs'.

I've web searched for details of these things, but no luck.

Anyone have any ideas ???

They look like hand made packs with tarps strapped over them.

I haven't found any information on packs as ridiculously large as the ones they use; probably custom made.

I've never been that far north, but I question the usefulness of a 60 pound pack in any climate. Also, I have no idea what the hell they are carrying that weighs 60 pounds.

I watched that show for a bit, but I couldn't stand the bitching.
 
I don't think that they're external frame; I didn't see a one. It basically looks like a HUGE rectangle with straps. I think that's what it is; stuff wrapped up in a tarp with straps attatched.


Yukon Pack Contents:
* Sleeping bag
* Bed roll
* Dry bag (incl. three pairs of socks)
* 1 extra pair of shoes
* Gloves
* Hat
* 1 extra jacket
* Whistle
* 1 can of bear spray
* Compass
* Leather “needle”
* Rope for Yukon Pack
* Shoulder straps
* 1 personal item (participant’s choice)
* GPS locator

hehe that was a silly commercial before the show. i want to eat cereal out of some leaves while catching a snake!
 
A yukon pack is a tarp opened up with all your stuff in the middle and then you roll the tarp up and tie it down with paracord, the only "frame" is what you put in it and in what way. Has anyone used one? What do you think of them?
 
i've never used one, but i watched some of that show. what they did was lay their tarps out, packed everything according to weight/ratio, and then folded the tarp around all of there "nesessities" and tying it off with para chord. they had duct tape covering their shoulder straps and a make-shift sternum strap also. it's pretty much a pack made from a tarp. brilliant if you're in that kind of situation, but overkill for anything else.

it is pretty awesome that they made a backpack out of their tarps.... but still, just overkill.
