From what I gather, the Northern Territories aren't very good for this. In fact, I just read a story about this guy's cabin being demolished in the Yukon. I've read about people doing this in Northern BC, but that was 20-30 years ago, I imagine attitudes have changed. I've also heard about people doing it in Newfoundland. Just curious if anyone knows of someone doing this. Feel free to DM instead.

I've had several illegal structures I lived in torn down by the RCMP, most in winter and it was devastating. You can still get land for cheap in the rural Maritimes, loads of hobos and dirty kids including myself have bought land out here and a doing all the cool homesteading shit we always dreamed about doing out west. An acre and a half of forest in my area just sold for $5000 and larger acreages go for an average of $1000 an acre. Its a poors Paradise.

I've actually narrowed down my plan to 3 places. 1. Northwestern Quebec. 2. Innu land in Labrador and 3. Abandoned towns in Newfoundland.

I looked into the legalities of the Newfoundland crown land lease and it is indeed about $100-150 per year, but you need a survey done, and that's like $2K.-$5k depending on the size of the plot. Also, that permit is only for "recreational cabins". Meaning you cannot live on it year-round. The year-round permit is a lot more per year and has requirements such as a certified septic system, water source etc.

Why bother with a cabin that can get demolished and cant be moved? why not RV/Tiny house? Cabin on wheels
They took away my license. Although theoretically possible, I have no reasonable prospect of getting it back :/
Did you think about dinging a hole instead of being above ground ? I've read some news about a guy who lived in a cabin that was semi underground and very well hidden and stayed there for years
I'm actually all housed up now with a sweet subsidy, nice place too. Hopefully I can get all my gear back by next summer and build a bushcamp shelter. Best of both worlds.
