Waterproofing your carhartt.

how stiff is yer jacket now? ive worked with beeswax before and it tends to melt and bend in heat, does the neatsfoot oil do anything to prevent this? i dont doubt itll be a bit waterproof but if it gets hot that beeswax is going to melt and make a huge sticky fucking mess. the first time i dreaded my hair i used beeswax to help bind them together the first few months...until summer came along.
 
I think instructables as a whole contain such low quality information that it deserves mention here (almost the same caliber of information found in "yahoo answers").

On topic: I hope that this is the one good instructable, because waterproofing Carhartts would be a nice project.
 
the wax to waterproof wax cotton jackets - Barbour's , Belstaff's is pretty cheap anyway and doesn't have much of a problem transferring onto your other kit like a homemade concoction might.... I have mucho experience with this type of garm - the Belstaff biker jacket was the hard wearing non leather type of clothing we all went for as first wave crusty English vegans - I even wore the trousers for a while - fucking hot and uncomfortable but the style points were off the scale

I used snoseal(beeswax) on converse allstars once. They stayed dry but were a bit sticky. I didnt mind having dirty ass shoes but a sticky jacket might be too much of a mess. Let me know how this turns out im curious.

Ive used mink oil with much success. Not a big fan of putting it on leather cuz its kinda slimy and seems to work better on fabrics. I used it in combination with beeswax on the top flap of my shoulder bag.

Didnt read the link in the op but i figured the best way to apply beeswax is to get it and the surface warm and gently rub it on dont push too hard cuz it will clump up. Leave it in the sun to let it warm up and soak into the cloth and maybe rub it in some more.

Another tidbit on beeswax is you can sometimes buy it on ebt in the bulk section of health food stores. Also works great if you apply it to thread to thicken up to use for sewing book binding or what have you. Works waaay better than dental floss.
 
I've used 3M Scotchgard on tents before and it works well without creating the sticky mess. You can find it in the auto section (cloth car seats) of any walmart, etc. I

you can buy almost anything on ebt from the co-op in manhattan. like sixth st co-op i think its called.
ive seen beeswaxed thread before aswell

honestly it was sticky as fuck at first. but after ironing it and taking the heat gun to it then letting it sit for like two days its fine. pretty darn stiff but not as bad if i used a mixture of paraffin like ive seen. definitely smells awful too. i put a bunch of beeswax and neatsfoot on my boots then heated them up with the heat gun and they're pretty water proof so far.
ill probably just end up buying that otter wax shit next time so i dont have to clean up a huge mess again....

thats what my stepdad uses on his work boots. he swears by it

Yes. Its shit. Dont waste yer money. Filsons and Fjall raven make some decent shit but you can just improvise yer own with beezwax and paraffin.
