Thirty arrested as rioting continues at Can Vies building in Barcelona
Demolition of unofficial grassroots civic centre, occupied in 1997, provokes widespread unrest in poor area of city and beyond

Thirty people have been arrested after a third night of rioting in the Sants district of Barcelona. The trouble started on Monday when police forcibly evicted people from Can Vies, a building that has served as an unofficial civic centre for 17 years.

After Wednesday night's arrests more protests have been called for, with further violence expected.

The atmosphere is tense after three days of confrontations across burning barricades between residents and baton-wielding police firing rubber bullets. A television outside-broadcast truck and the excavator used to demolish Can Vies were set on fire and banks have also been attacked.

By Tuesday night the disturbances had spread to other parts of the city, while there were peaceful acts of solidarity elsewhere in Catalonia, and as far away as Valencia and the Balearic Isles. A solidarity march has been called in Madrid's Puerta del Sol.

Can Vies, an abandoned building owned by the city's transport authority, was occupied in 1997 by young people in Sants protesting at the lack of public facilities. It was a symbol of grassroots activity in what is a mostly working-class area.

Asked why it was necessary to demolish Can Vies now, Barcelona's mayor, Xavier Trias, said: "We knew it would create conflict and that's why we've been negotiating for three years but we have to obey the law."

Under the district's urban plan what was Can Vies cannot be built on and will become an open space.

The mayor today has also criticised the chief of the Catalan police for resigning on the morning after the riots began, saying "it's not the moment I would have chosen."

Trias has agreed that an intermediary can negotiate on behalf of the city as representatives of Can Vies refuse to deal with his administration. A spokeswoman for the centre told the Guardian that they would discuss his offer but that it would have been better to negotiate before he had ordered the centre's demolition. In response to government claims that the riots are the work of a small group of troublemakers, she pointed out that Can Vies has the support of more than 200 community associations.

A demonstration has been called for Saturday morning with the intention of rebuilding Can Vies, which has not been entirely demolished. The spokeswoman said that while Saturday's "rebuilding" would be largely symbolic, architects say the building can be saved.

While Can Vies has proved the flashpoint, the intensity and rapid spread of the violence reflects widespread anger and despair, especially among young people, who see little future for themselves and are bearing the brunt of austerity policies.

Above all the crisis and popular resistance has centred on property, first with the housing bubble and since then with the policy of evicting anyone who cannot keep up with their mortgage payments. Centres such as Can Vies – and many more that have sprung up during the crisis – have functioned as help providers for those hardest hit.

Barcelona city hall has called off plans to demolish and redevelop a squatted building in one of the city’s poorest districts after four nights of violent protests.

Authorities said on Friday that they would halt demolition plans and attempt to reach a peaceful solution after widespread outrage at the forced eviction of Can Vies, a public building that has been occupied by leftist groups for 17 years.

Confrontations between protesters and police continued on Thursday after crowds gathered to demonstrate in the Sants district for a fourth consecutive night.

Police said they had arrested a total of 59 people in four nights of violent clashes after squatters were evicted and demolition began on the building, which is owned by Barcelona city transport authorities, but has been used as an unofficial civic centre since 1997.

The streets of the working-class district of Barcelona have seen pitched battles between protesters and riot police after thousands gathered to stage night time demonstrations against the closure of Can Vies.

Rioters hurled bottles and stones at police barricades, burnt bins and broke windows during the protests. Banks have also been attacked and the excavator used to demolish the Can Vies building set on fire.

Baton-wielding riot police charged protesters, fired foam bullets across the barricades and attempted to disperse the crowd using a high-pitched horn.

The violent disturbances were blamed on a small group of troublemakers but the protest has won support from across Spain and peaceful demonstrations to show solidarity have been planned in other cities this weekend.

"These protests are not just about the eviction. The eviction was just one more blow after the crisis," a Can Vies representative said.

"The people are fed up of taking blows and in the end they explode."

The abandoned property was occupied in 1997 by left-wing activists who used it to host concerts, training courses and other community activities in the rundown area of the Catalan capital.

But the transport authority which owns the property wants to redevelop the area and turn it into a park.

Police forcibly cleared the house on Monday following a court order issued after negotiations broke down between the city and the squatters.

After an emergency meeting Barcelona city council said it would “attempt new dialogue” with neighbourhood leaders to reach a peaceful accord.

for all of those OUTSIDE of spain who are interested in teh subject:
Barcelona's still good and burning. Today is the 5th consecutive day of protest after the CAN VIES EVICTION (17 year old squat in the Sants neighborhood). Among the highlights in the past days:
- monday morning the place was evicted (took teh pigs 6 hours)
- monday evening the demonstration started. Probably around 1500 people.
- tuesday (after having torn down part of the house), the excavator doing the destruction was, in turn, destroyed by the meddling kids. 6 detained so far
- wednsday, around 50 demonstrations have been called in and around Barcelona, but also in Bilbao, Valencia, Burgos, etc. Turn-up in Sants is said to have been over 2000. shit got fuckt up all 'round \m/
- the 6 previous detainees released. 28 more arrested.
- monday and tuesday, barcelona.indymedia was down from around 14:00 until the evening.
- thursday. made national front page news. public damages (only) seem to have reached around 112 000 bigones. turnup is said to have reached 7000.
- destruction has been exclusively limited to banks and financial institutions, realestate agencies, local government equipment (trash containers, stop lights, etc), TMB equipment (who owned the place), pigs and pigs equipment and equipment used for the destruction of the house. nobody touched any other kind of property
- neighboors have been cheering at windows and opening doors from apartment buildings to shelter kids from pigs. \m/
- the mayor promissed to discuss possible solutions with affected groups IF the violence stops. what he does not understand is that affected groups refuse to talk to liars and cons! offering to start discussions AFTER starting to tear down the place is not anybody's idea of a fairground discussion starting point. widespread refusal to negociate with those who TEAR DOWN A HOME AND NEIGHBORHOOD SOCIAL CENTER in favor of converting it into an OPEN SPACE.
- (unconfirmed) negotiations theoretically to be taken into the direction of the rehabilitation of the building and remaining in the hands of the people.
- pigs and politicians blaming each other: The mayor blames the chief of police for resigning on monday, saying "it was not a good time"
- president of the catalan local "government" reminds the "united left" party that they approved the reurbanization plan which destroyed canvies. same smell. different color.
- 38 detained until now. 7 foreigners. 2 minors. around 20 released and awaiting charges.
- SATURDAY, neighborhood meetings are to start at 18:00 and will move towards the big demo in Universitat.

a nice day to all. fuck da pigs!
