Traveling the Yangtze river

I am currently thinking about getting a little boat and going as far down the Yangtze as I can stand. I'll have a 1 year work/residency permit with likely 9 months left on it. But jail in China kinda scares me, especially in some of the more rural places along the Yangtze. Can anyone offer any advice on the legality of doing this.

Also if anyone has any longer term river travel experience your input would be appreciated. I've done some river travel in Texas but only weekend trips.

What your doing sounds epic...been to China, but cant say I have any advice or knowledge on it. Why not ask the Chinese embassy where your at if its kosher ext.
