Hello y'all

Hello, I am Matija and I am slowly getting tired of this small rustic village where I live. I am slowly preparing to travel europe (balkan, eastern europe, denmark, france, italy, back home) with train, before going to study at university. I am disheartened though by the cost of food & hostels in western europe so I hope I will manage to find some squats and dumpster diving opportunities.

Well, about me, I like music (mostly indie rock, but also punk & metal), I can barely play guitar, I hike a lot and I read way too much politics. I hope you will bear with me haha and maybe even give me some tips, since this will be my first longer travel alone.

Hey! Welcome to StP!

Where are you going to uni and what do you plan to study? I'm in my last year of uni now, in the US.

Have you gone traveling before? Are you going by yourself? Sounds like an awesome trip ahead of you!

I don't have any experience getting food or sleeping for free in Europe, but in America & Australia it's very easy to camp out basically anywhere (stealth camping), all you need is sleeping gear! That saved me a heap of money on my last trip (I didn't pay for accommodation for a whole month :) ). Also check out Trustroots and Couchsurfing if you haven't already, if you're interested in meeting people that way! I've found hospitality networks like that are awesome, have made some lifelong friends that way. Maybe some folks here on StP would host ya too :D

As for food.....it was sooo easy to steal from supermarkets in Australia, and dumpster diving was also quite plentiful in the cities. Again, not sure about Europe but food is generally easy to come by and save on. I got my own lil camping stove for the last trip I did so even if I did have to buy groceries, I saved heaps.

There's tons of info on all this stuff all around StP :)

I am going to study mathematics in Ljubljana's university (wish me luck haha). I used to travel with my family and school, but these trips were short and more organized.

I will probably travel alone, I have some friends in Bulgaria, Poland and Netherlands though. Thanks for advice :) I think stealth camping won't be an option, since I will be mostly staying in cities (upside is that there are probably more squats in cities than in countryside :) )

What are you studying?

Ah yeah it is still possible in cities (some parks, graveyards, anywhere you can fit a sleeping bag) but yeah more difficult than in the countryside!

Awesome, I find solo travel to be such a sweet way to travel :D This'll be a different sort of trip for you, I think you'll looove it

I study video journalism and psychology :) woooow good luck with maths!! Haha
