Tacoma, WA.: Sweet camping spot.

If anyone's traveling through Tacoma, WA, there's a good spot to camp out, close to both tracks and the I-5 freeway. It's right next to the Tacoma Dome best Western hotel. It's a plot of land owned by the Puyallup Native American tribal counsel here in WA state. It's specifically set up so that people can camp there for free of charge and free of harassment. I'll put some pics of it here, and a video I took if I can. I hope this info can help someone out!

That is very cool - free of charge camping. Thanks for the heads up and pics!! :)

Very interesting. Tribal police probably wouldn't pay much attention if you kept it nice even if you stayed long term.

Any issues with the homebums down there.Used to pretty rough but that is a good spot. Isnt the Signal bridge for the yard right near there.Used to be an old tramp that lived in the divider woods right down there between the split in the tracks but last time I drove through there it looked like they had cut most of the undergrowth down.

I didn't have any issues with homebums aside from one guy who asked me for a quarter once and then walked away. As far as the tracks, I'm not sure about anything other than what little I saw. I'm on a hitching spree right now, although I'm considering hopping out from where I'm at now, which is Kelso/Longview.

I totally know where that is, but never knew it was a tribal campground. Sounds like it may be a better option than trying to camp in the jungles just across the river in Fife.

Just hitched a ride all the way to Portland. My goal for tonight is Albany, cuz I've got some people there to see. I'm pretty sure I'll make it too, cuz it's been a good day for thumbing.

(An IRC friend who follows this forum found this thread for me.) Looks good; is it still available / open? The Salvation Army in Seattle is shutting down its extended shelter this Wednesday, April 15. :(

i wish i had known about this... i was in tacoma a few weeks ago, and i ended up sleeping in an abandoned lot.

it is NOT a good city if you dont have resources, but there is a day hall that feeds every day on 13th and yakima.
