i had fun finding this shit on the net.

The M1943 Backpack. This is a design based on a US Marine Corp pack used in the Pacific theater. It was intended to be a replacement for the M1928 haversack. Few were issued due to the release of the M1944 backpack system that saw limited use at the end of the war. This is a mountain rucksack used primarily by mountain troop such as the 10th Division. The pack was fixed to a lightweight tubular frame. It is the predecessor to the ALICE pack used through Vietnam and well into the 1990s.

This reminds me a lot of the old swiss army backpacks. Not very comfortable and heavy even while empty. Nice back ventilation though.
