hey so I am fed up with capitalism so I just bought a bike and am planning on traveling. I used to live in my station wagon but have never lived on the road. Being a CIs woman, who's 21 and 5'4, I'm kind of scared so I was thinking of getting a dog? Any advice is super welcome, since I am super new to this, and have a lot of friends who travelled by hitch hiking but I kind of want to bike. Also on places that are cool to go to, and advice on places to sleep. Thanks! I'm starting out in Eugene Oregon
 
Getting a dog when you're new to the road is a terrible idea, imo. You'll quickly realize you can't go in anywhere with the dog, or that its hard potty training a dog on the road, and its gonna be harder to find people willing to let you crash. Not to mention you're on bike, you have the funds to neuter/spay the dog, buy a bike trailer for it, and make sure it doesn't get bugs or worms? Went to rainbow one year and every single traveler I know that got a pup there got rid of it within the next two months pawning it off on friends, family, or a shelter.

Spare the dog the rough start into life and travel with someone who's been on the road a while.
 
Yeah man I agree please don't get a dog till you have an idea of living outside, getting around with it and keeping my it and yourself healthy. This whole site is answer in many ways to your questions.
 
I had a dog forced on me for a while when I was on the road (my road dawg got arrested, I wasn't about to abandon his pupper). It did make me feel safe having her with me (I knew she'd wake me if anyone was around) but it was also a huge pain in the ass, a lot of worrying about her well-being, and a lot of shit talk from people I hitched with or saw on the street. Personally, I'd never willingly travel with an animal unless I had the stability of a vehicle.

Just be aware of your surroundings and avoid sketchy people and you'll most likely be fine
 
Sounds fun to be much more stealthy than having a car. I always had fun on my bike but the beer does get heavy.
 
As for safe places to sleep while bike touring post office mail lobbies are almost always unlocked I have slept in them across the country, the catch is you need to do it in smalllll towns when everyone is asleep and less likely to come get their mail. You have electric outlets in there and its a federal property with a chance of having cameras, so relatively safer than sleeping outside. I recommend motorized bicycle touring.
 
Bike travel Awsome . just make sure you know minor repair and maintenance on bicycle . i learned the hard way . you definitely have flats on your travel . i also don't think getting a dog is good idea . be kool if you could find someone to tour with you . i got few trips under my belt but i was lucky to have someone with me we never left our stuff unattended. Definitely go by bike. If you're mostly self sufficient you have nothing to fear. I camp every night and it's easy to find a spot. Should be just as safe for a woman as a man too. My friend Viona rode from Columbia to British Columbia with no problems. Ask me anything. I've ridden sixteen thousand miles in the past 21 months through eight countries.
