Montenegro is a small Balkan country with rugged mountains, medieval villages and a narrow strip of beaches along its Adriatic coastline. The Bay of Kotor, resembling a fjord, is dotted with coastal churches and fortified towns such as Kotor and Herceg Novi. Durmitor National Park encompasses limestone peaks, glacial lakes, wildlife such as bears and wolves, and 1,300m-deep Tara River Canyon.

Personally we spent most of our time in the bay of Kotor, it's beautiful, you can wander round the old town, and up into the fortified walls for a great view. It's free off season, there's probably a charge at high season but you can also hop a fence off the old mule track, the Ladder of Cattaro. This is a decent day hike on its own that just seems to keep going. It's signposted by red and white directional paint, just keep on going and going and going and eventually you break on through to the top where there's a small cafe to drink beer. You can walk back down the road or get a cab for not much, or just head back the way you came if you've got enough time.
