Italy, not feeln' you

I've been here in Florence for a few days, and maybe it's just me or the rainy weather, but I'm ready to ditch the idea of going further south to Rome. A younger guy I met at the hostel I'm staying told me it would be worth my time to check out Rome. He's from New Zealand backpacking around the continent. He has a more cushion for a budget than I do, and I heard nothing but awesome things about Spain. And my new compadre his heading in that direction. I'm probably using this thread to get a grip and go to Spain instead. fuuuuuck...still can't make a decision....

I'd say in my experience Spain is cheaper than Italy. I guess it depends what you want to see on your travels though.

I'm going to move this to Europe section of the forum.

Have a safe trip wherever you end up.

I'd go for cheaper. That and being in Florence has left me feeling bored. I'd figured Rome would wind up having more of the same thing.

If you're not feeling Italy head to Spain through the NW of Italy and south of France, literally the most beautiful fucking area ever. Literally stop everywhere once you get near border with France its totally worth exploring going to little towns and hitting all the cities, seriously its not a place to just blow past.

Rome is nice, i wouldn't tell.you to not go there, Barcelona is more my.kinda place. Spain is fucking full of drugs, tons of weed, food is cheap, living there's cheap. The further south the warmer it stays its a pretty perfect time.to head there and just meander south.

Ok, I know this thread is quite old and OP surely has moved away from Florence at this point (!!!), tho the stuff said about Italy and Spain here is quite wrong, according to my experiences.

First off, Italy is dirt-cheap for train travelling, especially if you just train-hop your way (without paying the damn tickets). But it's extremely hard for hitchhiking, ESPECIALLY IN THE NORTH. Most people just hop the regional trains, it's easy and you can travel all across the country for zero bucks.

It's much harder to do across Spain, where the long-distance transports are quite expensive and there are tough controls in the trains.

THere's a lot of hippie myths about Spain that are plain wrong, and unless you do the pilgrimage thing to Compostella the safe way is to stay in either Catalunya or Andalusia, coz frankly, Spain is for the most part very conservative and miserable, especially for Castilla.

As for Rome, it's actually one of the best Euro big cities to be, as there's tons and tons of squats in southern Rome, unlike Florence that's got one or two.

Being that it's been nearly 3 years since the last response to this thread before yers id say chances are a bit slim on getting the info yer asking for. It might be easier to introduce herself to some folks here before asking for info on squats. Just my 2 cents.
