The distance a soldier walks every six hours, decreases 1 mile for every 10 pounds carried over 40 pounds.

recently found that out. had to share.
 
This is mostly true. There are some (riddiculously complex) formulas for figuring out how far you can walk versus how much you carry etc etc. Lighten the load a little bit, and you can go further. But not having to stop in town to resupply so often, you can also go further (and carry more). I am working on my own equations to figure everything out, will post it when I figure it all out.
