this map of permanent immigration checkpoints, there looks to be one in Niland. Any tips on precise locations and hot to avoid these on our way to and from the Jambo anyone? I plan on coming in from the east via Ripley and that back road.

Are you an 'illegal' immigrant? no offense, but unless you're not a citizen of the US, or are trying to import drugs, you really don't have anything to worry about, otherwise I would have mentioned something in the official jambo information.

the closest checkpoint is about 5-10 miles north of niland on hwy 111. coming from the east? i don't remember, it's quite a ways out.

Federal checkpoints have been known to confiscate legal medical cannabis, that's why i try to avoid them.

I passed two of them, had to stop at one.

The first was on CA 111 on Sept. 25th. We were going south on 111 and didn't have to stop, they were only checking the northbound. The post is south of Bombay Beach, north of Niland.

The second was on CA 78. CA 78 goes east out of Brawley, then swings northeast.up to Blythe. We had to stop at this one, Sept. 26th, and they just waved us through. It is located east of the Imperial Sand Dunes between Glamis and Blythe. We were worried about this one. All these checkpoints have dogs. I was with my wife and two cats in a small van with our road supplies; a pretty full vehicle. We were worried they would tear the van apart looking for whatever, make a mess and terrify our cats. I was relieved when they ignored us. However, they can and will check out anyone they want for illegals and drugs, as Matt said.

On a side note, we didn't see or feel any earthquake activity on the two days we were down there.

I would avoid those checkpoints at all costs, I've been detained, thrown in a holding cell, car torn apart, computers thrown into the pavement for nothing. literally nothing just driving thru. it's nothing but trouble, avoid ICE checkpoints at all costs. I'd drive hours out of the way just to avoid one.

The problem is that there's pretty much only one road in and out of Slab City.

bummer. they tend to set them up at bottlenecks on purpose to force you through. good luck all. maybe this particular one will be nice.

there's one I think near Yuma (?) with a light up "price is right" style counter for how many seizures they make. straight out of a 1980s dystopian future movie. "I'd buy that for a dollar!"

The checkpoint is only heading north or your way out of slabs typically. Going south there is no checkpoint, they dont even stop your vehicle. You just drive past the one for northbound traffic and past cameras. Going northbound i would be careful as they have been known to go through vehicles at times. If you have a dog they almost never stop you to search the vehicle and just remember to never consent to anything. If they have the right to search your vehicle they will not need your consent.

sorry you had that experience, but i've been through them more times than i can count and i never had an issue.
