i am driving from portland to san fran to pick up a friend & we wanna just tool around cali for a bit from mid august to mid september...any suggestions? i havent been south of san fran yet. any festivals, gatherings,or places i should hit??

Generally go down the Pacific Coast Hwy.
Coming from Oregon take the 199 at Grants Pass - cut across to PCH 1.
PCH 1 is a beautiful drive !
Or take 101 for Redwood forests...
