Best route east from DTW

Need some advice/input.
If you were bike touring from Detroit to upstate NY towards Maine, What route would you take? Highways? state routes? No smartphone or GPS.
When I went to the UP I mainly used the state routes or side roads roughly following the Adventure cycling route.
Just curious what other tourers usually use.

Is the north country trail bicycle accessible? If so that would work, otherwise i would plot a route in maps.me for a bicycle. Ive never had it steer me wrong, its how i navigated maine to tj on a 250cc dirt bike that couldnt handle freeways.

Ohio really sucks for the most part along lake erie- not a lot of places to stealth camp. And too many damn cities back to back. It's packed like a goddamn sardine can.
