Athens, the capitol city of Greece, it looks like it's been hit hard by the recession, but it might have looked like that before, I don't know, I hadn't been before.

It's a cool place to wander around, plenty so see and do for free, cheap souvlaki (meat on stick) for about 1Euro a pop from street vendors.

It's a mix of old and really old, there didn't appear to be a financial district, a downtown, there was the touristy bit, the market and ancient shit.

There's plenty of graff decorating crumbling buildings, there's loads of stray dogs and cats, but they seem well looked after.

There's a huge urban sprawl but the centre is quite small.

I went up to one of the three main hills near the Acropolis and climbed over this cliff to smoke a joint. It was a ledge where you could see a lot of the city but not be seen by anyone else. I lit up a joint and listened to music... I'm assuming the smell gave away my position and some guys made noise behind me, so I looked up. They saw that I saw them, so they asked me the time... And I thought nothing of it, signed the time to them, and they waved and walked off.

Maybe 15 mins later I hear footsteps, and soon enough they're on either side of me with a knife maybe an inch from my eye, holding my shoulders so I couldn't move. I was so stoned by this point that I didn't even comprehend that I could be getting robbed. It was really interesting how slowly it took to register that "people are actually robbing me." I'm fortunate in that very few potentially life threatening things have happened to me.

So they ask for it all, of course, and I just freeze, with my hands up, and they scour over me, evening finding a knife I had in a pocket behind me. I was leaning up against a cliff and they weaseled their hands behind me and find this knife. Worst thing, though, is that they took BOTH my passports (Canadian and English). That was a real kick in the balls. They left without hurting me, but took my mp3 player, tablet, some money, and the passports. Expensive shit to replace.

I was stuck in Athens another month and a half or something. It was such a boring city, besides the conflict between the Anarchist types and the police. It was crazy to see how many demonstrations and clashes with Police there were. And with the Right Wing groups. Random police standing in formation at random intersections as shows of force, huge fortified busses just casually driving around packed with guys in full riot gear... The Greeks sure do get passionate.

I love that country, though. Some of the best people I have met there, and the most hospitable. Met a lovely Greek girl I was a little sad to leave.

haha awesome story dude. fuckers though. pain in the ass to replace for sure. i got robbed for the first time a few days ago, in Sofia. Was walking by central railway station and four, what seemed to be middle eastern refugees by my best judgement, agressively asked for baksheesh, gesturing that they were hungry. they were very aggressive with their tone an body language. nobody was around. i was stupid enough to say no sorry, and cut across the street, halfway across, i hopped a little fence to cross the tram line and two of the dudes followed me, grabbing me and demanding 5 leva. i took out 15 leva to give him 5 and he took it all immediately and they got right in my face demanding more. at this point i kind of stepped back into the street and there were cars starting to come and the dudes decided to leave the opposite direction back over the fence. i had more money under my shirt, my camera, passport, etc. so i feel very lucky in some way but i wish i knew some jiu jitsu or something that way they could have gotten nothing, instead, instant karma. oh well, lesson for me. funny that we got robbed once both and in neighbouring countries...

Ah Sofia, the first time I was slapped by a cop! First time I saw some real harsh clashes with police and protesters, too.

Lucky that's all they took. It's easy to think of ways you would fend such people off, but when it actually happens it all goes out the window. You just don't know how desperate they are. In some areas people will kill you for a couple bucks. In my mind, unless i'm sure I can beat them, it's easier and safer to give them a few coins or whatever and get out of there. Getting killed as a matter of pride is just stupid.

It's the twats like that that are making real refugees facing real problems getting somewhere safe.
