I'd like to know about the Asheville punk, DIY, and activism scenes.... And anything else, really. Thinking about moving there as I love mountains, nature, and sustainability-minded towns......
 
I know theres some type of anarchist house near DT where kids go to use the internet. Asheville is awesome if you have a place to sleep where APD wont find you... They just evicted all the bridge dwellers a few weeks back
 
the punk scene in asheville is dying out. rent keeps going up and everybody is moving to the west side, there was one good venue but it looks like its going to be shut down if they cant raise money for their legal fees. if youre into hippies and yuppie gentrification and pseudo anarcho pc punks you might like it though
 
Damn, ya'll are making it sound real shitty. There is this medicinal medicine/herb/sustainability school I really want to go to there, skills for the apocalypse. ;)
 
i have to friend that go to the herb school down their and they love it.....their also a really good one in OR
 
Asheville is awesome as long as your not carryin a pack on your back. not what it once was but none the less a pretty cool place. theres all kinds of organic farms and all that good stuff. are you talking about the school warren wilson?
 
firestorm is over rated. interesting book selection, but honestly ive read better zines. but asheville is a fun place, middle of the downtown, every week there is hula hoop tuesdays and drum circle fridays starting around 4ish or 5 and last till 10ish. meet alot of people there. just be careful of the over curious people that blend in a little to well. ive ran into people that were later identified as under cover pd. its an awesome town with a lot of fire still in it, but like posted earlier, the rent is ridiculous for the most part, and the while the town is average priced for the south, its still expensive as fuck if you live "normal".

oh and dont piss outside and get caught! they make you register as a sex offender, totally not making that up either.
 
The cops in Asheville, especially downtown, are dicks. There's a few squats right around the train yard, just be aware that they get raided fairly regularly especially when they need to make their quotas. (I was just there in February/March this year). Just use your common sense and you should be good.
If you fly/spange for money, you might be better off around Black Mountain. Good luck
