What are some relatively safe spots to stay the night in New Orleans? Whether a place to sleep in the van or free camping spots near the city

A lovely cut n paste from a Nola-dot-com article, why New Orleans and Safe shouldn't be put in the same sentence....
quote:::
Last year, 585 people were shot in New Orleans, and 153 of them died - staggering levels of gun violence for a city our size. Gangs account for at least 40 percent, and as much as 60 percent, of those shootings, criminologists and law enforcement officials estimate
::: end quote.

Most people actually bullet victims in the lovely city are innocent bystander, who happened to be in proximity of a gang member when bullets fly....

This years murder total sits at 156 so far.

On a slightly humorous side note - Nola will not be taking a medal in the zombie apocalypse... "Shot in the head/face" & "transported to hospital, listed in stable condition" - go hand in hand here... Got a better chance dying shot in the leg than you do in the head here - so definitely not in the running for zombie capital usa.

Well just so yah know...
Last year..
My bus (40' school bus)
Got stolen
From Dickson, Tennessee
They (dirty kids)
Stole my bus
Took it to voodoo fest!.
New Orleans!
Chalmette!
They weren't caught on board and 8 had to pay $1200
To get my shit back!
I got names but won't post here!
As for who was in on this, irrelevant at this point...
Fuck em
They know what they did I just hope they changed their act...
As far as me...
I learned a lot and now know that most people absolutely SUCK. .
I'm much more careful with who I truly believe and trust now.........
If the court case is closed, post their names... its only right and fair for fellow travelers to know who to look out for, and its not like it isnt public record anyway.

Probably a bunch of idiots shooting .22s at each other then. Because a headshot w. A 9mm or .45 will usually end a person

safe to believe it will be rough but the worst thing that happened to me ever there was being told to go to bed or that it '[i'm] fucked up - good luck' few different parts of the city and out in the darkness included. my point being you could also have a fine time.

Oh, Definitely!! Especially on Halloween!!!! I'm not moving any time soon! Haha, but he did ask about Safe.... & the murder rate, which kills mostly uninvolved bystanders, is a PSA.... you don't have to be hanging with the wrong element here, just grab a daiquir or visit a park where there's a small festival going... Fuck, walk along canal st. In mid afternoon.... Be sitting on a porch... That's all....

OP wanted to know...

@NotSoSchwillyWilly now that most folks have gotten the horror stories out of the way, here's where i parked my full size school bus while living in new orleans:

https://www.google.com/maps/@29.959...m1!4b1!4m2!6m1!1s1sANeliFL78udqBaZ9auuTgSVpBg

there's only 3 spots on there, but it'll give you an idea of where you can and can't park. you'll never be able to prk in the french quarter or the bywater. also keep in mind that my map is 8 years old, the last time i was in nola. also, you cannot park at the walmart.

but, nola is an incredibly unique city unlike any other in the usa and is absolutely worth visiting, you just need to be careful. just as you probably wouldn't go stumbling drunk down a dark alleyway by yourself, exercise similar street smarts in nola and you'll probably be fine.

also, please start threads in the appropriate section. this thread could easily have gone under destinations > usa instead of general banter.
