Website Updates StP will no longer be updated, but will continue on 'as-is'

Thanks for all your good work, Matt! Wish you all the best for your next projects in live! :)

Fixing a ripped crotch in your pants

Yeah, I think it depends on the cut, how they are designed. My jeans mostly rip first at the knees, then in the back around the corners of the back pockets and below the waistband, then maybe below the back pockets and only then at the crotch. Then it's time to look for new pants ...

Website Updates Squat the Planet will be shutting down at the end of 2023

First of all ... thank you so much for your work and dedication over such a long period of time for this site! It's sad news, but I can perfectly understand you. Just wanted to say that StP played a big role when it comes to me having the best time of my life. About 2014 I was depressed and...

    DIY Clothes

Sewing with dental floss always worked best for me. But I rarely repair my clothes. Only if I want to keep something so damaged I couldn't wear it anymore without doing some sewing. Otherwise I wear my clothes until they are almost destroyed and then replace them with something from a flea...

    flip-flops are the best

Yeah, that's true. Never had one pair of those, though. Actually, normal socks work fine for me as long as they are not really thick. And now in summer no need for them anyway. Last weeks I even rarely wore flip-flops, mostly barefoot ...

    flip-flops are the best

Yep, I agree. I always get the dirt cheap ones (1€), though. They don't last long, but when they break I just get a new pair. Wore them even last winter with socks, lol.

    Dublin/Ireland

Hi! Never hitchhiked in UK ... Made no sense for me, because the coaches are so dirt cheap there. If there is no reason for not taking a coach (for example traveling with a dog), I always would recommend it. With National Express or Megabus if you book a few days in advance you can go for...

Glad to have found this community!

Hi! Same here. Different reasons to vagabond and different location (UK, I'm from Germany) but the about three years I did it were the best time of my life, basically. Housed again since about five years now mostly because I need to care for my elderly parents. Having a job and living a more...

Random story I just thought about

I always find it awesome when you surprisingly find clothes that then become favorite pieces. I remember years ago I found a pair of black jeans in a pile of trash. They were a bit ripped already at the knees and they were womens jeans. But you could only tell because the pockets were a bit...

Making space for covid tests and masks

Here in Germany masks are not mandatory anymore in public places and shops, but many people still wear them there. In public transport (bus, tram, train) masks are still mandatory and you can be fined or asked to leave not wearing a mask. Actually, most time I go for groceries and the...

I want to get the fuck out my city

There is an article about being homeless in Amsterdam, I think it is quite accurate: https://whatsupwithamsterdam.com/homeless-in-amsterdam/ I "only" got fined, not arrested, though. And it was not even police, it was "handhaving". They deal with enforcing rules and regulations and deal with...

I want to get the fuck out my city

Amsterdam is nice, indeed. But also crowded with tourists. And laws and law enforcement are surprisingly strict there. You should not expect to be okay smoking a joint and having a beer at the channels. At least not at daytime. And yeah, I got fined 150 € for sleeping rough in a quite hidden...

I want to get the fuck out my city

I traveled for some time in Europe (I'm from Germany). Had a good time in Belgium (Antwerp mostly) and also in Switzerland. But most time I spent in England. Bristol, London, Brighton mostly but also Manchester, Leeds, etc. I can only recommend it. Quite big squatting communtity there...

Cheapest way to get to Cornwall UK from Midlands

Hi! As I was in UK I always used the coaches (Megabus or National Express) to travel. Much cheaper than train (couldn't afford those). Indeed it was easier to make some money for the coach than to try to hitchhike ...

    ...it is what it is....

Hi! Welcome to StP! Where have you been in Europe? I'm from Germany and spent most of my time traveling in UK (and a bit in Belgium, Netherlands and Switzerland). Free stuff is good stuff! :) Greetings from Germany!

Has anyone here learned to control their drinking ?

A "functional alcoholic" speaking here ... I mean by that, I have a quite high tolerance, I only drink beer/cider, no spirits. I never had really bad experiences with alcohol, I very rarely got wasted in the last years. So, in my humble opinion I can control my habit. That said, I would say NO...

Question where to charge your phone when everything is closed?

Sometimes train stations/bus stations have outlets you can use. Did it a few times (in Europe). Also as I was in England, there were USB outlets in some buses specifically designed for the passengers to charge their phones ...

Anyone ever travel gearless and fearless?

I was lucky insofar that I never lost my sleeping bag(s). Happened that I had no shoes in February in England or ragged clothes in cold weather. I had my backpack stolen from me once while I slept, but I still had my sleeping bag always. Lifesaver. But yeah, I used to breathe hot air in my...

Anyone ever travel gearless and fearless?

Cool! I use two sleeping bags. One is a summer sleeping bag, I use it mostly for insulation instead of cardboard. The other one is thicker. Not suitable really for -10°C or alike, but 0°C comfortable. :)
  24. Anagor

Anyone ever travel gearless and fearless?

Yes, I did the same, basically. Just the raggedy clothes I wore and a backpack containing two sleeping bags and a few other things (small torch, spare glasses, small first aid kit, phone charger, sewing needle, dental floss, a bit of tape). Plus a few things I carried in my vest (phone, small...

    Walking shoe recommendations?

Or just flip-flops. Even more minimalist, dirt cheap (€/$ 1 or 2). All what you said applies to them as well. No boot rot, can be worn with socks as well and even if you feet get wet, they dry quickly. Not good for hiking in the woods, though. Obviously. Or climbing or things like that. Have...

    Walking shoe recommendations?

Not much of an expert when it comes to nice shoes, especially for women. Currently housed as well, I use old plastic bathroom slippers as shoes, lol. Said that, my ideas: For comfort: Flip-Flops and Crocs. Many people find crocs ugly and I wouldn't wear them for going out to a club or alike...

How Has Government Lock-Down Affected Your Travel?

I don't know how the future will be and I think nobody knows, even the experts in specific fields. Because the situation is unprecedented and nobody know how long the crisis will last. Of course there were pandemics before but not in the now globalized world like this. Our only hope is science...

What kind of shoes do you wear while traveling?

    Preferred way to repair clothes?

Yep, made that experience as well. Tbh I like worn out clothes distressed by wear and tear. So when there are rips here and there I wouldn't sew it. Then the rips get bigger and I would still not sew. And then there are gaping holes everywhere and then I would sew but it's too much an effort...

    Preferred way to repair clothes?

Yes, I avoid using safety pins in places where there is a lot of stress and where it could hurt, like back of the jeans where you sit upon. There I always use thread or dental floss. But I like to use safety pins in other places. Yeah, it really needs practice and patience. I kind of lack the...

    Clothing for 50+ Windy weather

I think it really depends on your tolerance for colder weather. Housed at the moment but did a week long trip recently to visit traveling friends. Temps were 10°C max during the day and I wore two t-shirts, a tattered hoodie jacket, a fishing vest and ragged jeans (almost more holes then denim)...

What kind of shoes do you wear while traveling?

Yep, second that. Except that I really like Converse or Vans (or lookalikes) ... I mean those were my preferred shoes since my teenage years. But they can go downhill quite quickly. Those only held a few months. Problem was that a piece of red-hot coal fell on my shoe as I was sitting at a...

    Clothing for 50+ Windy weather

Well, in 10°C/50°F weather I would be fine in t-shirt, hoodie and joggers or jeans when doing some physical work or walking. When just sitting around I would add a lined vest. Thin nylon rain jacket would be good if it's windy/rainy. In my experience wearing too much can be counterproductive.

Never leave your pack alone, not even for a minute!

Yeah, an experience indeed. I only had two (not so severe) experiences in 4 years of traveling. Once my smartphone was stolen out of my jeans pocket in a squat in Brighton, UK ... other people missed things as well after that night. And once my backpack was stolen as I slept in Bristol, so I...

How to ask for a sleeping bag at christian second hand places?

Ask someone if you can use their phone. Or ask in a shop/café if you can use the phone there. Perhaps not walmart, more like a local shop or Starbucks or alike. Just tell the truth. Having social anxiety issues I think it's better sticking with the truth then to make up a sob story and then...

How to ask for a sleeping bag at christian second hand places?

No, not really. There is no loss or damage (*) for the train company, normally. Not even virtually, cause they don't sell tickets for fright trains. ;) It's illegal, of course. But for other reasons. *) well, in theory you add weight to the train, so it needs more energy or fuel. But that's...

What is the easiest wilderness bush shelter or shelter to make outside?

I would say, don't worry so much how it looks like ... I don't care anyway. Wore rags so often, lol ... see my avatar pic on the left lol ... Look for dumpsters next to apartment buildings or student dorm houses ... they throw out a lot (especially when the terms are ending). There are also...

In general, I totally agree! Said that, in one Starbucks in Bristol I left my backpack and even Laptop (as I still carried one with me) on my table while going for a cigarette outside (no problem, cause a thief would have to pass me) or even while going to the restroom. Never got anything...

    grey man/anonimity
