I used to be a fixed keel guy, but the shoals can be a real bummer so its nice to have the option of 4.5 ft draft or 9 ft.

    My latest liveaboard

I gave up on my wooden boat and got another plastic sailor. This is an Irwin 31 from 1968. The rigging has been replaced, furler restored, new head sail, bottom just painted, and has a good yanmar disel. She has a swing keel too! This boat just needs some deck paint and a few cosmetic repairs. I...

27 and tired of the 9-5

I recomend hitting the road. Having a car is great because it is good shelter, transport, and fuel can be jugged for, insurance covered from a day or two of side work. Don't wait to find a crew. Spread your wings and soar. If you want to head west with a group, try meeting some folks im the se...

Best of luck to all you green horns. Try and get a cheap more or less disposable boat 26ft or less to learn. Anything bigger requires skill and forethought like chess. A small boat you can man handle into compliance withou worryimg about death. Throw the engines away, learn to work the wind, and...

I manage a mexican restraunt so improving daily hahaha. Tag alongs are fun! Idk if I will do this because I do love my farm in WA. The only issue is the states are making it a pain in the testes to do the things I would like on my land. Damn permits lol

    Solentiname Islands, Nicaragua

If I did this I would sail my boat there, build an earthbag house that is small and round to protect against storms, and a few huts. I would set it up as a primitive hostile and offer sailing charters aswell as an import/ mail service for back packers.

    Solentiname Islands, Nicaragua

Anyone been to, or know anything about these islands? I was offered a trade for a private 5 acre island along with a registered US inport export corporation in trade for my farm in WA. The news paints the situation in Nicaragua as bleak, but I was curious what those that have been there recently...

Pretty much the only places you will see boats like this are in Asia, and most of the boats of this vintage and style are long since dead. Ive seen people retrofit this style rig to a modern boat online, but have never seen one in person.

Any other sailors in the Salish sea?

Looking to meet fun sailors to help each other out with work on boats, share good spots, and maybe cruise around. I am around in the sound, I will be doing a full refit in late summer, and it would be great if I can minimize time on the hard. Willing to help work on your boat if you help me...

Anyone Into Sailing From NC For The Summer??

I thought all boats where built using load bearing bulkheads until the late 60's in production boats when molded interior pans started being used to save costs on the assembly line. The older the better in my opinion. I would only get a boat with hand laid up fiberglass if possible, or pull the...

What size range are you looking for? There are quite a few MK1 Yankee 30s around there, Albin Vega 30 is also a very nice boat. I doubt you will find a Rawson out there, but it might be worth looking into. I am a bit prejuduce, but the early ones where built with hand laid grp, to wood...

what to do if your fuzzy friend(s) gets taken?

Anyone Into Sailing From NC For The Summer??

Wood boats are beautiful. Too bad all the ones I looked at in my budget were quite far gone. You definitely have to know what sort of commitment you are making when you take on a wood boat. I was too timid of making a wrong choice since I did not want to get a survey to save costs, which led me...

    Photos Sailin' on

@tacopirate when the boat is on a 17 degree heel it has a 28 ft waterline. I probably had a following current too. That is just what the gps was putting out, so it might be a bit off. It is hard pressed and not quite comfortable at that rate. She is very comfortable around 6.2 knots regardless...

@tacopirate I totally agree with you on sailing being an art. The rawson sails well. The fastest I had it was 7.5 knots close hauled way over canvassed and pushin' it in a blow, 12 knots down wind with a following sea. The boat was just screaming, full sails up. I got caught out alone in the...

I have learned quite a lot so far @Dmac, but I am still a novice, and have heaps to learn. I think sailing, line work, and all the trades involved are fairly simple to understand the basics to get you going, but a man can spend a lifetime trying to master them. My favorite knot, that is tough...

    Boat Life Photos

This period of blisters started during the 1970's oil crisis. It is because the quality of the resin took a nose dive at this point. There are several reasons why blisters show up, and they all combine poor workmanship with poor materials. That being said, if you get any boat that is old, if it...

Photos My first (and most likely last for a while) solo trip on a sailboat

lol, don't get discouraged, once you figure out what you are doing you will love romping in those conditions. On a boat like that, it would be near impossible to capsize in a 6 ft wave. These are my stomping grounds too. From your description it sounds to me like you were pinching up too hard...

    Looking for a Family

Read the Complete Sailor by David Seidman, then find an old salt that will teach you the ropes for a day out with beer. The best way to sail is when the engine is broke, then your ass is on the line so you are less likely to be tempted to pansy out and hit the starter. The first 3 or 4 times...

    Living on the hook?

Living aboard is quite fantastic, but it does have a learning curve. You will find great spots just by getting out and throwing the hook. Looking at charts to find good anchorages is the best way to go about it. Buy a chart book for your local area, and the areas you wish to be. You will need...
