The sketchiest ride that ive hitched

I got in the back of a pickup with no tail gate once going down the freeway, those pricks were doing 140km/h weaving in and out of traffic looking back at me and laughing. Kept sliding towards falling out and I had to stick as many fingers as I could in one of the post holes on the bed with my...

    Northern Bushcraft

By far the best survival manual for the "Northern boreal forest" also known as the Taiga. Lots to learn for those from other regions, especially on proper use of knives/ axes in bushcraft situations.

    Looking for closure

Well you certainly have the aptitude for your adventure then, the cold weather experience will come. I personally find the silence, solitude and profound cold of a northern winter exhilarating not to mention the Aurora(northern lights)! You will need to invest in some serious cold weather gear...

    Looking for closure

We have a name for guys like you up North, "End of the roaders". Idealistic ranting hippies that watched "into the wild" one too many times and don't listen to the locals who live it every day. Do not get me wrong, I am trying to be constructive not negative and I have a ton of experience in...

    Looking for closure

Honestly if I was you I'd hitch hike to Alaska before digging in. The north is the place to be and Alaska is full of opportunity, plus they cant kick you out! As for living off the land I admire your resolve but I believe you are in for a rude awakening. The skills to do so take years to...

I own two Osprey packs they are worth the money, which pack is best will depend on preference. If you intend on carrying your pack much your back will thank you for skipping the Alice pack...

What is the hardest/scariest thing you've faced on the road?

I've got a story for you, I couldn't make this shit up if I wanted to... So I'm squatting outside town during my second northern winter, it's a particularly harsh one -40 or worse and constantly snowing. Come back to camp one night and my dog is missing which doesn't add up as he was very...

    Sabatoging hunters cruel games

I will watch long enough to be 100% or not take a shot(that's what spotting scopes are for) it isn't all about killing something... I guarantee I've spent more time in the bush than 99% of hunters and will gladly report in detail any poaching or abuses. There will always be bad apples but you...

    Sabatoging hunters cruel games

This just goes to show you are hateing on something you don't fully understand, it is completely illegal to shoot any sow with cubs at least here. To do so and not report an accident will earn you the confiscation of rifle, truck and equipment as well as fines. It can be hard to tell the sex...

    Sabatoging hunters cruel games

I am not a fan of trophy hunters and also have never experienced American hunting culture but up north hunting provides much needed food security for those struggling to get by... Sure there are yuppies who trophy hunt sheep but the average guy up here hunts for meat and not much gets wasted...

Slept outside at -30ºC Winter Hitchhiking across Canada

Do it bro, winter is such a beautiful yet challenging season in BC. Road travel can become quite hazardous at times but that is part of the thrill! Be prepared for the worst if you do go though.

    Fishing without a rod

Never lived any place "bank lines" were legal but if your hungry and dont have a rod most times thats your best bet. Up here in Yukon its legal to"set line" for Burbot during the winter, its essentially bank lines but vertically through the ice. Just whatever bait you can scrounge, some strong...

    Cane for self defense

Yes a cane or better a staff can and will work for self defence. Highwayman has also brought up some very good points, the best defence is situational awarness or your mind/ training. A flashlight is also very important!

    Old coleman naptha stoves

Only use naphtha(aka white gas, camp gas, Coleman fuel etc.) or gasoline. The stove in the picture is bullet proof and works even at -40 if you dip the brass fuel line in fuel and light to preheat or fire starter paste smeared on also works good. If it's older model the pump gasket is leather...

What pots or pans do you use?

When I was hitch hiking around alot I used an MSR Alpine 2 stainless pot set, later I ditched the smaller pot and added their fry pan which nested well on the bottom and in the end I also added a GSI stainless ketalist. Being able to cook real meals for more than one person is a huge advantage...

    Throw tent and tarp?

Some have 3 poles to afford more headroom, any tent that needs a tarp to stay dry isn't worth its weight. Don't get me wrong I carry a tarp but its not to cover my tent. More often now I just bring a Bivy and Poncho set up.

The Mkettle Woodburner - anyone use one of these?

If you really want something as small as a pop can stove check out the Vargo Triad stove! https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5011-311/Titanium-Triad-Stove. It's just as small but has little pot stands/ feet attached to it, pre made stoves are honestly worth the money.

The Mkettle Woodburner - anyone use one of these?

They all work same way pop can stove is just an improvised trangia or Svea without a pot support worked out. They all burn ISO, methyl hydrate among others, hell moonshine would work though that's a waste lol!

The Mkettle Woodburner - anyone use one of these?

It is possible but awkward, heres a link to kelly kettles system it'll give you some ideas how to manage it. The pot stand thing could be easily made with sheet metal and aviation shears. Alcohol stoves I've used extensively both Trangia and Svea. The Trangia mini stove set was small and light...

The Mkettle Woodburner - anyone use one of these?

Thats actually alot better for backpacking than a kelly kettle. Problem with these types of stoves is you cant cook anything conventionally. Free fuel is pretty awesome but years ago I changed to a Primus omnifuel stove and it'll burn gasoline(or diesel/ kerosene/ compressed canisters), enough...

Gun or no gun in Alaskan Wilderness?

A 12g defender with a folding stock or a single shot break barrel is a very useful tool in the backcountry, bear/ moose protection, deterant with rubber slugs, shot for small game or even flares. Inuvik, Yukon Territory, the real ends of the Earth!

I've been all up through there in the winter, worked for a few weeks(living out of wall tents/ traveling on snowmobiles). That was quite the eye opener in so many ways. As you start on the Dempster Highway there's an energy about the place that grows as you get deeper into this vast...

If you haven't gone already Id recommend against Yukon since you don't have a passport and couldn't work without a visa if you needed money, besides fall is settling in and unless you've got mad bush skills your not going to make it through a Yukon winter.
