Website Updates Squat the Planet will be shutting down at the end of 2023

Well shit. First off, thank you Matt. Thank you so very much for the years of work and dedication to StP. I discovered StP in 2016, and it was a bit of a reawakening of an earlier period of my life that I thought I had “outgrown,” but you never really outgrow the urge to be untethered from...

Question How much did your setup cost you?

I‘m easily over $3k(US) for bike and all the gear. I didn’t spend it all up front, but bought (and sold) things over time as I researched, pursued good deals, and sold gear that didn’t work out. It’s taken a few years to perfect the system that works for me (mostly gravel), but will be different...

Yeah, that makes sense. I use it for off-highway riding. I hope you’re enjoying Plumas County, my birthplace 😊

How to find free tarp and corage?

I see tarp on the sides of roads/highways all the time. It blows out of truck beds. If you have a bike, take a ride down any highway and search. Or just walk it.

I find this link National Snow Analyses - NOHRSC - The ultimate source for snow information - https://www.nohrsc.noaa.gov/nsa/ really useful to find out where there’s still snow. Use the dropdown menu to choose your region for a closer view.

    food when riding

I buy dehydrated fruit like sliced apples, bananas, and mangos in bulk at natural food stores. Way lighter and less bulkier than fresh fruit. It’s really important to eat some fruit and veggies everyday since your body is your bikes engine. Also, pouches of tuna instead of canned.

Photos Picture of your loaded bicycle

Do it! I’m much happier on gravel and mud than fighting with cars and near misses on pavement, but I can still do that on my Troll when necessary. It’s a solid bike; I only wish I ordered it with belt drive. Here’s two different setups I’ve used:

As much as I enjoy booze, it’s the absolute worst thing to do to stay warm.

I’m in the same boat. Just got my $1200, and nearly $1k per week (!!!) in unemployment. My fear is catching the virus and being hundreds of miles from home.

    NorCal suggestions?

I live near Arcata, California which is about as liberal and free as you can get. California is NOT a squatter friendly state. The police regularly raid homeless camps and try to harass them away. There are better social services in California than many states, but even that seems to be...

    What's A Bag Loadout for Around $200?

Yeah, if you can scrounge up some money for a decent sleeping bag, you’ll be much happier throughout your journey. Some will compact down to the same space a wool blanket uses. If not, at least sew your blanket into a bag so that you don’t keep fighting to stay under cover. Safe travels.

    Locks and bicycle security.

Remove any name brand decals, especially if you have a high dollar bike. Ugly it up with some duck tape and stickers (bands, anarchy, etc.) This will make it a lot less lucrative to steal.

How regulated is sailing and what kind of barriers would someone face?

Go to the library and find a good book on “how to buy a sailboat”. Knowing what to look for is invaluable, otherwise you’re going to buy a money-pit...well, they’re all going to be money pits, but at least you’ll have a better idea as to how much work and money you’ll be in for. Go for it!

    Bike Traveler Jamboree?

I wouldn’t be able to meet up monthly either, I was just saying that meet-ups could occur monthly (or randomly) at different locations so they wouldn’t be confined to one place, once a year. I was thinking of planning one for next summer too, so anyone whose interested can PM me (us), and we...

    Bike Traveler Jamboree?

Is the spot on public land where it won’t be an issue for who knows how many bike travelers show up for a few days? I’m looking to move this idea forward to fruition, and welcome any and all help and feedback. I’m loathe to exclude anyone, but would be really cool if everyone arrived by bicycle...

    Bike Traveler Jamboree?

It just seems that a bike traveler would have to leave their bike in Slab City, then hitch a ride with someone to be able to hang out at this year’s Jambo since it’s moving further out into the desert. Even if a cyclist wanted to pedal further out, hauling that much water wouldn’t be possible...

    Bike Traveler Jamboree?

If such a gathering exists, I can’t find anything on it, so let’s make one happen! Colorado sounds like a good place: great climate in the summer, close to the middle of North America, many bike routes converge there. I was thinking of somewhere in a national forest where the camping is free...

    Bike Traveler Jamboree?

Is there such a thing? There should be! No offense towards the Dirty Scout Jamboree, but I was just reading the changes to the 2019 DSJ, and it appears to be automobile-centric this year since it will involve meeting at Slab City, then driving further into the desert, and requiring lots of water...

If you had to live on a bike the rest of your life?

I’ve been riding this Troll for a couple years, and I really like it. I’m currently using the stock 2.5” tires it came with, and can’t say I notice any difference from thinner touring tires on my previous ride. I’ll probably go fatter the next time I buy tires. I really got tired of being on...

    Minimalist Sailors in Hawaii?

How does the $60/month work? Is that to anchor in a designated area or basically anywhere? Who is that paid to? Which island are you at? An increase from $60 to $240 seems pretty significant!! I guess relative to what rent onshore goes for, it’s a bargain. Overall, sounds pretty nice aside...

I totally agree about the need to give it your all, or don’t do it at all. Having to pay housing costs on top of maintaining a boat would be ridiculous! I think that’s why so many boats end up for sale. The allure for me IS the lifestyle, the freedom it can provide, providing the sailor...

Yeah, I know wood boats are a LOT more work than fiberglass. I sent him some questions, and he said it’s a “hit and miss”...I honestly don’t know if that’s a good or bad engine. All of the boating forums seem to say DO NOT buy a wood boat. Sigh.

    Salish Sea/Puget Sound boatpunx

Thanks so much for the enlightening answers! I agree that we really don’t need much/most shit, but we’re all guilty (to some degree) of wanting and needing certain things, e.g. a bike, shoes, water, etc. It’s admirable, and I commend you for being on the extremely less materialistic end of the spectrum; it’s truly where we all need to...

    The Sailor and the Lovers

I felt the same way about older gay men when I was younger; I thought being gay meant being a lecherous old man. I was picked up hitchiking when I was 15, and propositioned for sex by an older cowboy and it scared the fuck out of me. I was gay, but didn’t identify with any of the gay...
