Awww Matt I'm really glad you're doing what's best for you, I know you've been putting tons of work in over the years and I'm stoked for whatever you move up and on to. I just wanna say thanks to you and everyone though, I've met my best friends through this site and have been able to read so...

What would you do and see in Japan?

Basically following up with you OP, haha. And giving my experience to others...I spent a week and a half in Tokyo recently and it was a really cool experience. Onsens (hot baths, cold plunges and saunas --- make sure they're tattoo-friendly) were insanely cheap and relaxing, it was fun walking...

    Can I live two lives?

Welcome! there's been some really great advice and ideas already but I too felt pulled to explore all through while I was studying. I traveled as much as I could during breaks and summers, and studied abroad in Australia for year of my bachelor's and took a smaller workload so I had plenty of...

Why is it that some people can't fit with everyday society like other people?

Yoooo seeing an arcgis story map here warms my damn heart! Former fellow GIS student and map nerd here ♡ I have a lot to say that maybe I can't properly put into words right now...but... I have been chasing community for as long as I can remember, before I even knew that's what I was looking...

Question How to cope with being housed up

As someone who also finished uni during an incredibly restless time in my life, there's 2 ways to do it: 1) go to uni, do your work, go on trips on the weekends and breaks to scratch the itch, hang at the train yards, ride your bike or find a sport to get some of your excess energy out and...

@Scat Yeah any of those spots sound great! Let's try to pick one now haha I'm down for anywhere in that area. Maybe whoever is gonna volunteer to get there first and claim a spot can pick the location, I won't be able to get there early to scout or set up camp or anything

@Matt Derrick that spot and whole surrounding area looks soooo amazing! But yeah like @Scat and Jerrell and I have been talking about, Umpqua National Forest or somewhere more shaded and cooler would be more ideal.

2022 Jamboree 2022 Dirty Scouts Jamboree Location Discussion Thread

I think it would be pretty far for @Jerrell to make it to Snively and also it would prob be in the 90s everyday without very much shade, so I'm thinking the forest of Southern Oregon would be more comfortable and a lot closer for Jerrell and others on the coast to make it

2022 Jamboree 2022 Dirty Scouts Jamboree Location Discussion Thread

In response to Umpqua, I've been there and it's a pretty location, but there isn't much room in the pools. There were like 3 small pools for 2 to 3 people each maximum and Umpqua Hot Spring is very busy. But Umpqua National Forest looks like it has many amazing shady camp and swim spots so I'm...

Another suggestion I have is Snively Hot Spring a little further east in Oregon. Lots of nice camping down by the river there and a big dammed lake further down the paved road which is perfect for swimming, some cliff jumping and kayaking/boating. I've been there a number of times and always...

Question Do you guys find that the bike is too much of an issue for stealth camping/trainhopping etc?

Just depends whether or not you love bikes, I think I personally love bikes and since I've started touring, hopping and once having to hitch with a bike, I'll never go back to traveling on foot ever again! The pros outweigh the cons by a long haul. I can find better places to camp, I can peace...

  41. Koala

Is it worth ditching my tarp for a bivy?

Yeah what you carry also definitely depends on climate, I tend to travel in colder, wetter parts of the year where getting soaked could leave me pretty fucked. I also use my bivy kind of as a "waterproof phone case" for my sleeping setup...I keep my warm af comfy af sleeping bag and pad inside...

Is it worth ditching my tarp for a bivy?

Bivvies rockkkkk, carry both for the ultimate setup! Laying in a body bag (bivy) in a downpour sucks, laying under a tarp and getting your sleeping gear wet from the water spray sucks. So do both! My military goretex bivy is awesome and really heavy duty and holds up to trains and rough terrain...
