The MMSS is driving me nuts.

The MSS is just a bulky, heavy system and you can't really avoid it. Extreme compression on a regular basis will cause the insulation fibers to become matted and compromise the performance of the sleeping bag. It's best avoid that if possible. I usually pack it one of 2 ways: The first way...

    Texas/Arizona/New Mexico....

Hey, reserve your judgement until you've actually been there. Texas is a great state! I never had any problems traveling through texas. I actually thought it was easier than other places. I got two 100.00 bills given to me on 2 separate occasions. Plenty of food kickdowns. Lots of good natured...

A comparison - Carhartt (prada?) vs. Walls gear. Bibs, coveralls, coats, etc.

Those tmberland bibs sound well designed. I like that you can remove the insulation. imagine how nice it would be to get all wet and dirty, then just peel off the cotton shell and wear the quilted insulation to bed. Removing the insulation would let you dry the shell faster, too.

    full time travelers

With the exception of a few select areas, the cold is generally unavoidable. All you can do is prepare for it. Even desert regions like south west texas, Arizona, and NM get cold in the winter. Granted, they don't get as cold as Idaho or North dakota, but they still regularly experience temps...

    ALICE dilemmas

Might want to check out the USMC "ILBE" packs. The marines are replacing the ilbe, so the surplus market is flooded right now. You can find them for around 50-70 bucks on ebay. They were worth 500.00 new. pretty good deal.

    "Yuppie Packs"

ya know, after living out of a large alice pack, I decided to "upgrade" to a new, commercial pack from kelty. I was extremely disappointed. The alice has it's downsides.... they are slightly heavier and less comfortable for larger people, but I still think they are far better than the junk that...

    Backpack/Bedroll/Sleeping bag question...

What you need is a backpack with a frame, so you have something solid to attach your bag to....An alice pack or swiss "engineers" pack would be much better. Both can be had for under 50 bucks. As far as attachment, compression straps are the way to go. You can get them much tighter than...

lighting a fire in the WET!!

tinder can me made from a log by making a "fuzz stick" aka feather stick. This is basically a piece of dry wood 1 foot long and about 3/4 inch wide; with fine shavings carved into it. This creates a "nest" of thin wood shavings that can be lit with a match or a firesteel. as steelcitybrew...

Clothing for a winter in the south

For the most part, it still gets cold in the south. In texas and louisiana 20-30' F temps are pretty common at night from december- march. Daytime temps are usually around 40-50. Southern Louisiana has cold, wet winters. wouldn't recommend it. Extreme southern texas has warmer temps.

    wool or microfleece blanket?

The US army wool blankets are not the best quality. Some are only 30/70 blends of wool and synthetics, so check the tags. Italian, Belgian, or Swiss wool blankets are much larger, thicker and better quality.

    wool or microfleece blanket?

a wool blanket will let you wrap up and sit close to a fire without bursting into flames. It also retains 80% of it's insulating ability when wet. This is important, because WHEN you get wet, you can wrap the wool blanket around you and sit next to a big fire to warm up and dry off. They also...
