    boating from alaska to china

Agree with most of IBRRHOBO's post. Have to differ on the requirements on your own vessel, though. Captain's papers are actually only required if carrying paying passengers. I've crewed on a couple ocean passages on sailboats and have yet to crew with anyone with formal papers. Nice for...

News & Blogs "The Lure of the Open Road" -- Neat story of two women traveling on bicycles in 1944

The Lure of the Open Road by Thelma Popp Jones, 2007. A story of wartime wandering through the Eastern states by bicycle, truck, and riverboat in 1944. In 1944, a dear friend, Doris Roy, and I undertook an adventurous journey that we dreamed of during countless hikes together over our college...

    border patrol checkpoints

Yeah, sadly the fuckers have been doing this everywhere. The border patrol claims jurisdiction within a 100 miles of any border. http://www.socialism.com/fsarticles/vol29no6/checkpoints.html You don't have to answer any questions. But they can detain you for a "reasonable" amount of time if you...

    I swallowed feathers...

Actually, I think hydrogen peroxide in your ears is OK. I have a problem with ear wax buildup and a doctor once told me to let a drop of hydrogen peroxide sit in each ear for a few minutes before washing it out with one of those little blue bulbs. Glad your dog's OK!

    I swallowed feathers...

Little sips of water. If you use cough drops try to get sugar free ones because sugar depresses the immune system. Hope you feel better! Hey, how's your dog? I haven't heard anything since a few days after the paw cut incident?

    Relationships & the road

Poly works really well for me. It only gets tough when I settle someplace for a while like I am for school right now and can't get around to see all of my spread out sweeties!

    blacksmithing

I took a class a couple years ago in small knife making. The guy had the most simple forge design I've ever seen and it worked really well. We used old files as our metal stock and a chunk of railroad tie as an anvil. Slow cooled the knives in vermiculite (the light stuff you put on gardens) and...

    Hard Times and Confusing Conditions.

Hang in there. I don't have any great brilliant advice or anything, but it gets better than high school. Shit, almost anything is better than high school. Don't do college just to do college, though. The job market for new college grads is only marginally better than without a college degree...

    OW! FUCK!! Kanker sores!?

Ow! I hate canker sores. I get them from pineapple. I've had good luck with this over-the-counter stuff called "Kanka" It's a brown liquid that you drop on the sore and it numbs it and coats it with a film that supposedly helps it heal. I don't know that it actually heals any faster, but it's...

    Curing a Rabbit hide

Rabbit skin is so thin that's it's hard to do much with without tearing it. A couple eggs spread over it (not the fur side!) and then stretch it by hand for a couple hours until it's dry. Goes easier if you do it in a warm room or by a fire or something.

Whoa. I'm not terribly girly but I think I want one!

    Follow up on squat sites

Interesting. I figured out how to access the aggregate data - the dbf file will open in excel. But I couldn't find a way to drill down to specific addresses. I also failed to figure out how to turn the "tract code" into a specific neighborhood, although I'm sure there is a way to do that at...

    Traveling with LOANS? HELP!

It's too bad it's a student loan. They have extra ways of collecting those and there isn't a time limit on them suing you. Lots of good information here: http://www.studentloanborrowerassistance.org/ But, I mean, if you're traveling you're probably not making enough taxable money to have them...

how to pass a piss test

I'd heard a slightly different story on the gelatin. What I heard was that you were to drink LOTS of water until your pee is totally clear, and then a couple hours before the test take the gelatin and some vitamin B supplements. The B vitamins are to colour the urine and the gelatin is to...

    Seattle, WA

Sweet. There's a little monthly DIY pamphlet with events and stuff that you can find around. I know they have them at the wayward (a little vegan cafe on 55th and 9th in the u district.) One you might enjoy is the really free market this Saturday: http://www.myspace.com/seattlereallyfreemarket...

    Free food

yeah it was an experience worth doing alright. I'm not in a hurry to do it again, but it proved it's point that getting lost in the woods isn't an immediate life threatening situation. Cordage is really fun. It's amazing how strong it is, even from plants that you wouldn't expect to be strong...

    Free food

I almost always have a bit of fishing line on me. I actually caught a little fish on gear I made myself once, though. Carved a hook from some bone I found, made line from dogbane, and a grasshoper as bait. It was on this survival trek I did a couple years ago trying to live in the woods for a...

Bad Experiences with Rides while Hitching?

Years of hitching and I've only had one scary ride, and in retrospect even it was more weird than scary. I was in South Carolina and got picked up by a good 'ol boy who was very insistent about wanting to suck my c**k. Despite continued and vocal protests that I was really not interested, he...

Boy boards multiple domestic airline flights, unticketed.

Too bad he used a strategy that only works until you're 12 or so. Hella ballsy kid, though.
