I've been traveling off and on for 30 years. During the 80's I lived in my car a lot, and traveled from Canada through Mexico and most of the western states. I worked in the Alaska fish canneries in the summers and made enough to live and travel the rest of the year.

I didn't live the Hobo life, but I used the freights for transportation when they worked out, mostly riding the old BN around the NW and mostly based out of Seattle. I got as far south as Sacramento a couple times on the UP down the back side through Wishram and K Falls.

In the 90's I put down roots on the old family cranberry farm where I could be my own boss. It's worked out pretty well, except it keeps me busy during the warm months. Now I do most of my traveling in the winter when you'd freeze your ass off on a train.

A lot of times I just buy a cheap ticket to someplace else in the world and then go walkabout. Last year I got off the plane in the Philippines and ended up coming home by train across Asia, Europe, and N America. I also crew on tall ships. It's all cool as long as I'm moving.
