By kids, I mean children.

We have a 2.5year old and a 4.5month old... have been settled for a while and have acquired many other beings to take care of including goats, chickens, dogs, and a cat.
We love our homestead, projects, and being mostly self-reliant, but feel trapped.
The most looming trap for us is having such ignorant neighbors (including, but not limited to, my parents).

Leaving has been bouncing around in my mind. But having children and critters creates so many... logistics to take care of.

We need to line somebody up to take care of our farm animals and property.
Need to acquire a camper for cheap.
And, well, need to get our house dogs some manners.

Anybody out there ever travel with kids/babies/children? Ya'll have any insight to offer? How bout internationally?

Also,
"Don't have kids" is not an acceptable answer - cuz too late.

You might have less difficulty finding somebody who could caretake your homestead and animals here.

I don't remember anybody posting that they travel with kids (although somebody might start, how about you?)

Hmmmm...I wonder what the kickdown potential would be;)

You've got a very nice tumblr, btw!

I've been thinking about this as well since I'm pregnant and pretty much unwilling to dedicate myself to the bullshit if the grind. So I googled "parenting on the road" and found these lovely articles, very inspiring. I've known many road families who live country based lifestyles out of semi-large or large vehicles. One such example was a really cool family who lived on a converted school bus, very cleanly transformed into a 4 bed barracks with cabinetry for food and other possessions. Other than that they didn't have much but were clearly enjoying life with their 3 children.

Ooooh...I almost forgot.

I recently met some kids who have a new baby of their own and are rubbertramping in a school bus.

They seem to be happy. I figure they have 5 good years of traveling before their child has to be enrolled in school or be home schooled.

I have no idea of what additional hardships they face.

so yer homestead is a house next to yer parents? or are you living in their back yard? i dont really understand.

when i think homestead i think land far away from annoying neighbors, if thats what you have you have what alot of folks here dream about having. but of course i can understand you wanting to travel, as far as having 2 young kids im sure theres ups and a shit ton of downs.

like you mentioned ide say step 1 is getting some kind of vehicle that you can fit all yer gear/kids/animals in...tough call, but good luck.

I sent you a pm with a link to a FB site where there are people traveling with children - usually rv and such who may answer back to you. From reading from some of their input - seems there comes a time for being back at a steady homeplace but others are homeschool and continue. I do believe I have also run across info on the internet as well using google to search family traveling/living rv etc - I'm sure you will run into info out there. In the meantime I will send fb link and hope that someone answers back :) Let me know when you contact the site and I will admit you. Good luck on your research and potential travels :)

Aw, thanks!

So I googled "parenting on the road" and found these lovely articles, very inspiring.

Thank you! These sites look really interesting. From the first: "So in a nutshell, the only advice I would hesitantly give on parenting on the road is ‘don’t take any advice on parenting on the road!’ Or take it, but don’t think for a second that that is what your experience will be like."
I have alsol done a little research into "Roadschooling" once kids are of school age, which sounds like a good thing.

So, in this day and age, its going to be pretty difficult to find a plot of land without any neighbors. And I don't know if you are familiar with the kind of people who usually live in rural areas, but they can be pretty damn ignorant.
We live about 5 miles outside a tiny town in Northern Michigan. Ours is a 3 acre plot that is inset into 30 acres owned by my dad and stepmom, neighboring acreage owned by my aunts. Yep, I live near the town I said I would never return to when I was younger - but the rural lifestyle beckoned me after I returned from living in Galway, Ireland for 4 months. I am a craftsperson and have always loved animals and this life usually treats us pretty well. But it can wear on a person - especially the long winters when all of our travelling friends are out west and down south.
Recently, we had a neighbor call the building inspector over a barn that we are building - we just need to send our $25 into the township, but it's pretty damn obnoxious to know that we live near a taddle tale.
Plus, tensions have been high recently for various reasons - my dad has always been an avid Fox News absorber.

I am know ya'll can relate to the trapped feeling of stagnation, and I knew I would get some good info here, thanks!

I have no idea how bad the neighbors are, but if you check out her tumblr you'll see that she's into some pretty awesome stuff.

Seriously, check out the tumblr. Neighbors would have to be pretty bad to want to relocate.

wow good call on checking out the tumblr. damn.

and @BobbinGoblin thanks for clarifying some stuff for me as i was a bit confused, but i think i get it more now. i lived in sandston virginia for a while and while it was beautiful and the house was amazing on a bunch of questionably owned land, the neighbors got to me too. (if im not mistaken sandston has some crazy ratio of white power folks per capita)

do you have money tied into this land? it sure seems like a hell of a amazing set up to lose because of a shit dad who is a dick. do you own the land? i dont understand what a inset of land on a plot means is that like a lease or basically just like a handshake from yer family like "you can hang here" kinda thing? i understand the itchy feet i really do, and not to judge or sound mean but i think if i was in yer position ide be super stoked to have a place like that to call home. maybe im just not understanding how bad things with yer family/neighbors are, but try extending a olive branch? thats one hell of a amazing life to give up on. like i said before, shit thats the life i dream about having one of these days, well, minus the shit neighbors and blood family near by.

So, it was a land contract with my grandpa, but it is all in my name now - I am the legal owner, property taxes and all.
I definitely don't want to give up on this by any means! I think we can find someone to look after it in our absence... And then return to our little haven after our itch subsides ;)

Ugh, the shit is happening right now. It is actually my first clash with my stepmom since they got married 7or so years ago... Anyway, I should have never told her how I really feel and just kept on ho humming along. Maybe there is an olive branch in the future....

olive branch would be my choice, unless yer dead set on travelling then by all means, do yer thing. but hot damn...that place...

legally owning land, having farm animals, space to build things and create stuff thats actually not fucking shit...minus the family/neighbors you really are living the dream of most of the folks who are 30+ years on this site. most of us understand that settling down eventually is something thats gotta happen, and what you have is making me god damn jealous. of course i dont mean to downplay the bad stuff yer going through. but honestly, i am jealous of yer set up. i hope whatever you decide works out in the best way! 2 fucking thumbs up!

I don't have kids. I've never traveled with kids. I've met some wonderful families who do it, but so has she. Go get some tampons so this thread can stop being derailed.

this thread wasnt being derailed, but im glad you finally gave some advice instead of saying mine was stupid and offering no alternatives. so yer advice for this person is to get some tampons? A+ advice, deffinetly the kind of advice im sure they wanted when they started this thread. so you have no kids, no experience with kids, and nothing of any value to give to this person? why even make it a point to be part of the thread? once again @Wyle E Coyote yer contribution is on point. thank you for giving us yer opinion.

Hahahaha hot damn.

We are totally living the dream!!! And I will be 30 in July. I just want to keep on living all of our dreams with our chitlens.

My other inquiry is travelling beyond the US. I have done a little bit of solo travelling in Ireland and Spain, but having two little people is a whole nother animal.

I want my family to see Ireland and lately Argentina is calling my name.

It seems like WOOFing is a good option (but I've never done it). We could potentially drive to S.America... Kid friendly squats would be a dream (which pretty much just means no smoking in the house). Camping is definitely an option (easier when they are at least a year - even easier without diapers... everything is easier without diapers). Flying is always a pain in the ass - I am also interested in travelling by boat...
Just kind of brainstorming here...
