Anyone know if there is a safe spot to squat, fly a sign, hitchhike west? I know nothing about the town and just wanna pass through west as fast as possible!

I know this is late, but bill millers on McCullough and rector near North Star mall is a straight honey hole. Me and a buddy got kicked down more fried chicken than we could eat cuz a nice lady observed us scooping up people's leftovers, and the next day I busked it by myself and ended up with 40 bucks, and more chicken than I could eat once again.
The river walk man. It's hella nice down there year round and you can drink all on the walk. Just don't take it up to street level. Nice people downtown man they'll throw you a buck or two. Stayed down there for about 6 months sleeping under bridges.
