Traveling with a dog

I've been looking for a dog because it sounds like a good idea, at first. But is the companionship really that necessary? It seems like a dog would be more of a burden on the road than anything else. Thoughts?

hmm...not exactly what i was looking for, but upon even more thought, the dog would probably get in the way.
