Need something utilitarian that'll hold up a while, I don't want the blade snapping while I do something. Any ideas?

Seconded. I had a Mora Robust that cost me 12 bucks and it was the best knife I've ever owned. Thing's got an 8th inch thick spine and is completely indestructible. I watched a video where they batoned it through a bunch of bricks, hammered it into a tree, and stood on it.

Budget and intended usage would help.
Pretty much infinite budget, as I'm working and classify as an independent, so gas and insurance are no problem for now, and I'm good at saving money. And like I said, as utilitarian as I can get. Decent enough to be useful, scary enough to deter muggers/crazies.

I use the Gerber Gator fixed blade knife, it's lightweight at just over 5 ounces, tough as nails and is built to last.
When it comes to pocketknives I use the Victorinox Swiss Army "Farmer" Pocket Knife.
