yeah, this is the best way to do it, even maybe one can use the dessert version of the fork, spoon and knofe to be more portable , and the key ring gives the opportunnity to separate them if you ever feel like eating with fork and knive.

I just got one of those Wal-Mart Hobo Tools. Works alright for me.

i had one and it fucking broke.

In retrospect, those multitools are too small, and pretty hard to clean, especially if someone uses it for, say, strawberry shortcake. I think mine still has dried whipped cream in it. I think I'll stick with a full sized fork and spoon.

I'm a cheap-o and packed this stuff into a standard sized duffle bag and backpack, both school-boy sized and spray-painted black.

In the duffle bag:
3 pairs of socks (1 pair of self-cut anklers) (1 pair is worn)
2 pairs of underwear (1 being worn)
plastic bag for tieing up smelly laundry
nylon rope
smallest foam sleeping mat
sleeping bag (-5 degree rating, in a compression sack)
1 cut-off sleeveless tee shirt
1 regular t-shirt (usually being worn)
1 button up plaid shirt
2 long-sleeve t-shirts
1 thick sweater
1 pair quick-dry shorts
1 pair of pants (usually being worn)
Toothbrush and paste, Deodorant, earplugs, soap, shampoo and a few bandages.

Regular backpack:
homemade notepad
2 pens
change purse
plastic spoon, knife and fork
camera
1 book
ziploc bag containing travel info
splashpants
wind-breaker

Am I a minimalist? I can't judge, becaise most of us are in a sense, yet some people here will undoubtedly underpack me. ideally, i would like to cut this down by 50% weight (size is less of an issue)...but i'm also not hardcore transient, so it's gonna look at little different than usual.

My packs are probably as "yuppie" as they come. So kill me!

Winnipeg kids were a bit surprised by my lack of volume at first, and then threw it on the pile of things they didn't like about me. I liked my set up because when hitching I could throw the duffle bag in the trunk and my small pack with the most immediate stuff (book, atlas, food) up front. I packed it so if my duffle got nabbed, i would only be out some gear, and not my ID and passport, etc.

i just got a bunch of new gear. the more i think about my recent purchase, though, the more i feel i went overboard. but then i get distracted and forget about it..

THE LIST:
GI 4 piece modular sleeping system (cant be too warm)
cammenga GI lensatic compass with tritum (ridiculous, i know)
Gi sleeping pad (it was cheap, so who cares)
fenix tk12 tactical light (i could definitely use this everyday)
leatherman wave multi-tool (a lot of people on here suggested it)
swedish army firesteel (because everything is better in sweden)

plus a bunch of other stuff i already have, which is:

large alice pack with liner
GI 1 liter canteen
GI 5 liter collapsible canteen (dated back to Vietnam, from what ive read)
MRE (sloppy joe)
GI mess kit including silverware set
P38 can opener
tarp
tarp stakes (they were cheap, i wondered if they would be of use)

theres more, but it would be irrelevant to gear id take with me

I carry a big pack I got when I was younger for a backpacking trip in South Am.
So most of my gear is typical rei type.

-one of those florescent Sleeping bags
-1-man tent (pretty light, suprisingly)
-few pairs of socks, one extra pair of boxer briefs.
-few extra t-shirts
-Jacket, long johns and beanie
-ziploc with toothbrush, paste, razor
-Phone/charger
-Small towell simply because 'hitchhikers guide to the galaxy' It does come in handy pretty often.
-I had a pair of vans, but they fell off my pack in colorado.

and I usually seperate these into a smaller bag to keep with me in the front seat.
-Knife
-Road Atlas
-Journal/pens
-Small digital camera
