I find this very interesting. I've been watching a YouTube channel "back waters and back roads" who is doing the great loop in a shanty boat. I think it's his second time trying it.
I used to get chaffing on road marches in the army. As someone mentioned wearing boxers helps, but nothing beats a good pair of spandex biker shorts. No friction at all! Good luck and hope you are better soon.
I'd look around for an old pontoon boat, or at least for the metal pontoons, so I could build something. Those pontoons hold up well . They usually have several air chambers, so one puncture won't sink the whole pontoon. If you had access to plastic or metal 55 gallon drums, you could also build...
Thanks for sharing your journey! I have had more problems with aggressive dogs than anything else on my trips. FYI , Those small, pocket sizes cans of mace will stop a dog in its tracks and doesn’t cause any lasting harm to the animal. Works well on their owners too.
By the way, once past Valentine there is a distinct lack of trees along the trail. You might want to pick up an umbrella so you have shade whenever you want it. There are golf umbrellas that will attach to the handle of your cart, so you can walk n the shade, that would be a great addition to...
I was just up along the cowboy trail this weekend. Are you going east-west or the other way? I passed a guy walking with a cart who was going east. He was on the shoulder of the road, not the trail itself. I guess many people find the pavement easier to ride on, all day, than the crushed...
All good things come to an end. Thanks Matt, for all your hard work throughout the years this site has been up. I came here way back in 08, after that old digihitch site went down. I learned a lot from the people Here, and was lucky enough to make a great friend. Good luck to you, matt, Hope...
I agree, a ground sheet helps to keep the every day wear and tear down on a tent and helps to keep it clean and servicable longer. If expecting rain or sun/heat having a tarp is an excellent addition. It gives you lots of options on camp set ups. If weight and space permits I'd take all 3...
tents kind kind of suck in a storm, but are better than nothing. I have a large one I take car camping ⛺️. It’s great if it isn’t windy. It’s 9 x12 and I can set it up like a small apartment inside with air mattresses, chairs, folding table and even my portable toilet. When it is windy I use a...
A simple platform for your bed can make a big difference in usable space. It also makes sitting in the back a little easier. If you are going solo, you can dismount the passenger seat and turn it around. That way you have a good place to sit and chill. It also makes the back seem a little...
That sucks dude! Had the same type of accident with a Cherokee I used to own . I had to replace the rear axle rod and wheel but it drove well after that. Good luck with it.
@AussieTimm , I looked it up, it’s a space ship used in pitch black. I looked up movies filmed in Cooper pedy, ( quite a few filmed there including mad max beyond thunder dome) and a lot of pictures of that thing popped up.
Welcome back! What is the thing you are parked by in the third picture? Love the truck, looked ready for adventures in the bush. Getting stuck in a four wheel drive is a rite if passage for off roading. A hand winch or high rise jack are great to have with you.
Wood ash work well for covering feces and it helps with the smell. You might be able to rig up a composting toilet fairly cheap. There are dyi videos on YouTube about it. Good luck.
If you make it down to Roswell and have the cash you might consider going a bit further south and checking out Carlsbad Caverns. It is one awesome National Park.
You should be able to find some traveling folk in New Orleans right around now. Try the search for hangouts or maybe places to busk or fly a sign. There are lots of members, here, who have spent time there and have written threads about it. Good luck.
If you are tired of being in trouble, don’t cut off your ankle monitor. Just ride out your time and then leave without all that legal stuff hanging over you. You might get a little freedom, if you cut that thing off, but it will catch up to you eventually and be way worse than what you are...
I like to make myself a walking stick or staff. Comes in handy for lots of things and if I have to ditch if because it won’t fit in a ride, it’s easy to find another. I have never had a cop hassle me over it having one, but have had a few ask me to set it aside while we talked. Even a slender...
You could use an awl or if its a nylon bag you could heat up a wire or end of a coat hanger and melt a small hole through it. Or cut the hanger and sharpen one end and make a loop on the other, like a big needle, and force it and the paracord through the material. Most nylon bags aren’t that...
