nice. how many years/seasons have u worked there??

Altogether 3 years so far. Two years at canneries, and one year on a gill netter boat.

I'm going back again this year to work on another gill netter boat.

I usually take my Alaska earnings and fly to Hawaii and work on the Fall farming jobs there, but I'll likely choose something different this year. Probably just stick to the mainland and work some more farms, who knows..

Have a good season up there this year. Hopefully you got a site on a tender or gillnet boat. I know a few boat owners up there if you havent lined up work yet. Pm me for their #s

I scored a job on a gill netter in Bristol Bay. Haven't met the skipper in real life yet, but he sounded cool on the phone. Keeping my fingers crossed. I'd love to work on a Tender sometime.

From what I've heard through the grapevine, there is supposed to be a record-breaking number of fish this year. That's great for the planet, but not so good for the fisherman. I've heard estimates as low as 70 cents a pound :(

Yep I know Ron. I was going to meetup with him last year in Anchorage, but I ended up getting a job in Ketchikan instead. I might holler at him this year if he is still up there.

Cool - he is still there. He would be an awesome person to meet. :) I mostly see him on fb right now - if you're on fb - send him a friendship thing - search for railroadron - he is number one. If not on fb then I can send him a pm to have come on line here more :)

I got offered a site on a tender that was hauling cod & will carry salmon all summer. Pay was $200 a day while doing engineering duties in the engine room too. It wasnt lucrative enough for me to go out there in January but is sure is sounding better as I am still out of work in April. arggh I could have sent home plenty of money by now.

I hope the captain is cool & not a liar & or screamer. Be safe up there. If I happen to get up there Ill shoot you a PM on STP

If you don't mind highwayman I'm curious. How difficult are the engineering duties on a fishing boat usually? Oil changes and the like during down time? Most captains take care of they're mechanical or are you always bleeding a fuel line and trying to get some old beast to turn over.
Just wondering. The sea can't be too easy on diesel engines either I imagine.
I think I remember you mentioning a broken drive shaft on a boat you worked on... but that was long ago...
