Anybody in NYC know ways of getting food, or good places to panhandle/dumpster?
I'm living here in a shitty apartment with no electricity trying to scrape by, not doing so well.
Advice?

Don't know about there, but in my city there are church's that put on food spreads 5 days a week in the evening, other shelters do it during the day. Can you get to the library to look up some of these kind of places where you are?

If she is in queens or brooklyn I wouldn't tell her to go all the way out to the bronx to find resources. Nyc is pretty ephing broad and there's a lot of things, I was hoping to get it narrowed down to oh I don't know, a single boro. Yeesh.

So if she is hungry she should stay in 1 borough and not venture out? double Yeesh

She can get a goddamn street sheet and a little common sense and figure it out with your men's shelter as a shining starting point, then. Again, why would I tell someone to ride all the fuck out to bumfuck when there are likely hundreds of things she can do in her immediate vicinity? Those things take time, if she does't have electricity maybe she wants do things in the daylight? I don't know, the original question was broad and nonspecific. I am not an open encyclopedia but I can tailor my suggestions if I had a little more information. NYC is too broad to start with.

TRIPLE YEESH.

you seem very angry, she wanted to know where to get food. That question doesn't seem nonspecific to me. Chances are standing in 1 spot may not work so possibly move around a bit. You seem like you want to argue this ...ok you win ...

i have lived in brooklyn for 29 years. as a rule of thumb, do NOT go to a shelter. ever. the mindset in there is like that of prison. you always have to be on guard and ready to fight at any second to defend your turf and property. a large % of mentally ill people are in there. you are far safer sleeping on the street. actually i live at brighton beach and i see many homeless sleep on the beach or boardwalk benches when they are able to. cops routinely scan the beach from night to dawn and pickup anyone doing this. other places to sleep would be local parks. as for food, LOTS of options are available daily at local churches in manhattan. usually churches give out hot meals or a bagged meal twice a week. if you rotate the church, you will eat free every day. all this info is available online (which churches give out free food and when).

if you have worked this year, you should file a claim for unemployment pay,
whether you quit or were fired. file an application and see if they give you anything.

apply to all of these places for a credit card.
apply to every place on this list.
some of these places will say yes, some will say no.
don't be hurt if they say no.
apply to all of them anyway.
if they approve you, they can get you a new card within a week.
this list is for people with bad credit.
open up at least 3 to 5 credit card accounts.

open up some accounts at some banks so you can get some checks.

use these catalogs for shopping.
these are 'buy now, pay later'.
they will ship you some stuff and they send you a bill later to pay for it.
open up a few catalog accounts for shopping for clothes, shoes, etc.

if you need work, you can get some work from a temporary employment agency.

craigslist has a 'gigs' section with temporary work like
house cleaning and office cleaning.

this site has a good article on getting a loan without needing a job.

you could try a student loan when the college classes start again.
the us government will loan you money to live off of while you are taking classes.
you just need to fill out the fafsa application and to sign up for some classes
at a community college or a state college.
the government will loan you money for the tuition, rent, and food.
