Hi everyone, does anyone know if the Salvation Army will still get you a free bus ticket? I am currently freezing my ass off in Northern New England and need a way to California. Any input is appreciated :)

I don't know if Salvation Army does but I've heard that sometimes churches will get you a bus ticket. Might be worth looking into.

Thankyou, I've gone to several churches already. But so far all they have to offer me is a meal. I'm grateful for the food, but it's not exactly what I'm in need for.

I know the salvation army does over here in the UK. They will ask you where you want to go and why. They will then ask to speak to someone on the phone at the destination that you are asking to go to. My ex used to get tickets to come visit me, he would say I was his sister and had offered him somewhere to stay if he could get to me. They'd call me, have a chat, i'd confirm his story and they'd buy him a coach ticket.

They won't hand over cash to you and you can only really do it once from any given place because they get wise to it.

Good luck, I hope you get where you need to go.

check out http://www.travelersaid.org there is an office in Boston across the street from South Station. They have been a nonprofit for like 100 years. They will usually have you fill out some forms & you need a landline phone where a friend or relative is going to answer. They must either say that you live there, have been living there or can live there/stay there until you find work etc. They will give you a voucher for a bus ticket etc. They will ask you to repay them if you can when you can, which is cool. They are just helping travelers with no religious connection & just ask that you try to give back when you are able. Its a great system, i have gotten a few legit bus rides home. Unsure how much sob story is required like I lost all my money at a casino, or I got robbed or I spent it all on drinking alcohol & drugs. They are not really a homeless charity per se so unsure how much assistance they give to those trying to get off the Cold Streets to be on Warmer Streets but hell its worth a shot. Try to have that landline person briefed as to what answers to give "IN ADVANCE" sine they will do your intake & just dial the phone & start questioning them on the other end to fact check your story.

Good Luck.

Highwayman is correct, Trip. They'll save you the foot work if you have your story straight. Just remember that they are made up of mostly volunteers who want to help and deserve to be shown respect.
Happy travels and good luck.
