Hi everyone!

Here is a link to fire lookout jobs: http://www.firelookout.org/lookoutJobs.htm

Most of the positions will be with the United States Forest Service (USFS) or the National Park Service (NPS). It's sparse right now, but, later in the winter the it may fill up a bit.

Almost every position will house you up for a fire season either in the lookout itself or in other USFS/NPS living quarters.

I have been working for the NPS for the past seven months doing non-fire lookout related things and was really surprised at the amount of fire lookouts that are hired during the fire season.

There's also all sorts of other awesome jobs with the USFS and NPS. Trail maintenance, fire management, etc. That, however, is an entirely different post.

This would be an awesome job, hopefully they get some more listings in soon. Something a bit more north would be great.

Yeah, when I looked a few months ago there were a fair number of positions in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The ones in the southwest are usually in pretty badass places, though.

up in the idaho nowhere the wife and i once passed by a lookout waaaaaaaaaaaay up a mountain.

someting caught my eye and i had to drag out the binocs and made out that there was a platform built out over the void. had handrails and a hole in the middle.

we drove on down a ways and i stopped with a better angle and there on the platform was a freakin toilet!

i got the wife to put the binocs on it and we had a good laugh.

talk about hanging out in the breeze!

do you get electricity up there?
I haven't heard of any fire lookouts with electricity (this doesn't mean they do not exist). But, a lot of the posts have their fire lookouts stay in NPS or USFS housing, which has electricity. So, if you wanted to bring up a laptop, iPad or whatever the kids are into these days, you could charge it up overnight at housing and bring it to work at the lookout.

It'd be a perfect combination of getting shit done on the computer, reading, meditating, gazing and thinking.

And shit, NPS/USFS housing isn't bad. In fact, I am in NPS HOUSING RIGHT NOW ON SQUATTHEPLANET!

my dream job.
i gotta get me an amurrican working holiday visa or something, jesus.
There's gotta be some in Western Canada.

Canadian logging corporations sure do love to protect the forests from natural fires. So, you know, they can cut them all down to sell as timber ;) Don't want the forests to go to "waste" because of a silly thing like a natural fire regime. Shit.

What kind of education back round do you need? Will just a GED pass or you need some other shit. Ive seen some old fire towers in NH that look like a blast to live in, and they have people live in the cabins that they own to guide hikers and shit, they have a lodge were you can get tea and coffee and dry your gloves. Pretty sure this was in Franconia, and owned by the national park service.

Support StP!

Donations go towards paying our monthly server fees, adding new features to the website, and occasionally putting a burrito in Matt's mouth.

Total amount
$35.00
Goal
$100.00

Monthly Goals

  1. Paying the Bills
    $35.00 of $50.00
The first $50 in donations go towards paying our monthly server fees and adding new features to the website. Once this goal is reached, we'll see about feeding Matt that burrito.
  2. Buy Matt a Beer
    $35.00 of $75.00
Now that we have the bills paid for this month, let's give Matt a hearty thank you by buying him a drink for all the hard work he's done for StP. Hopefully his will help keep him from going insane after a long day of squishing website bugs.
  3. Feed Matt a Burrito
    $35.00 of $100.00
Now that the bills are paid and Matt has a beer in his hand, how about showing him your love by rewarding all his hard work with a big fat burrito to put in his mouth. This will keep him alive while programming new features for the website.
  4. Finance the Shopping Cart
    $35.00 of $200.00
Now that the bills are paid and Matt is fed, perhaps it's time to start planning for those twilight years under the bridge... if only he had that golden shopping cart all the oogles are bragging about these days.
