I got 75% of the lumber for this build from a dump pile that a contracting company made from remodeling a hotel resturaunt

Total spent on 1"insualtion and 17 foot rools (reflectix bubble wrap foil stuff)
350$ can
And the hardware and such ran me up about

115$

Fully insulated and sound proofed

(Wince) do you have co2 and carbon monoxide alarms?

I know a lot of folks think that (clay pot heater) is the schiz. But its a hazard.
Think about it. Fire uses up oxygen, and most people seal and insulate against airflow to keep heat in and cold drafts out.
So you light that up and then you and puppers settle in for the night. And all three of you are sharing that air in the van, sucking in the oxygen.

You might investigate 'chinese diesel heaters'. There are lots of forums devoted to these things and a LOT of vandwellers use them. They pull in combustion air from outside the van and exhaust combustion gas outside. The heat is passed to the cabin air which is recirculated via a fan. Prices vary, but you should be able to find a good one in the 100-150 us$

If the diesel heater is too $, there is also the rocket stove option: They can be built from repurposed/recycled materials ( you know how to build/reuse can see that from photos) Just set it up to draw and vent outside.

Came across this little convection heater these kids built that I thought would work pretty good for a van. With an isolator switch you could charge a house battery off the alternator while your driving to run the fan

That is very cool! I had not seen this one before.
I really like that design!

I dont like that it draws air from the living space, but it DOES vent the smoke outside. Another piece of downspout to bring outside air to the fire would be perfect for small closed spaces.

If it were me, I would make the oil lamp with some kind of sealing top so it does not splash when the van is moving. Maybe a couple of oil lamps from a thrift store without their chimneys, wedged or fastened so they dont slide... I bet glass jars (mason?) with a hole in the metal lid + wick would work, too. Oooo! Tiki torch cans after the bamboo falls apart! (Bet you can find those for free)

Now that I'm thinking about it, a simple variation on that design would be to design it with three or four separate wicks instead of one long one. Just cut separate slots instead of one long one. That will give some control over how much heat you get: Cool night, light one Wick. Minus10 outside? Light them ALL!

Heyo 👋

Been driving a bunch.

Haven't been able to update. But yes. I had a c02 detector. And smoke combine.

And I actually do have a disel heater installed the clay pot heater is not the only heat source

That sucks dude! Had the same type of accident with a Cherokee I used to own . I had to replace the rear axle rod and wheel but it drove well after that. Good luck with it.
