    Leaving Texas to cali

If you've got the cash to do it I'd recommend Amtrak, it's how I left houston to start a bike trip across cali. If you dont have a bike to check you can get off in Palm Springs which is an alright place to start in the wintertime

    Homemade raft boat.

I don't know about the legality of using them, and they'd be pretty hard to source, but life rafts expire. The companies who service/sell them just throw them away, and often their employees will take one home to put in a pool or something. Steering and propulsion would be tricky but they're...

    Homemade raft boat.

Pontoon boat is a cool idea, I wonder if you could find some ratty old canoes for a good price. As long as they don't leak you could probably build a platform between them. It'd be a lot more efficient than bottles tied together, and it would probably be able to support quite a bit of weight.

Best boots for walk long distances

I had a pair of these once, and at the time we were made to walk pretty much all day. They held up to years of heavy use and they're pretty comfortable in warm weather

First aid kits on the road?

When I did wildland fire our first aid kits were geared more towards saw trauma, insects and burns, but it wouldn't be too bad to have on the road. Burn cream inside of a sterile exam glove might help you out if it's that bad(in lieu of real medical care), but it feels very uncomfortable lol...

Not sure if I should go for cold weather sleeping bag or not

It was pretty bulky though, I had it strapped to my bike handlebars. It would take up some space in a pack but it's pretty manageable if you pull like hell on the bag straps

Not sure if I should go for cold weather sleeping bag or not

Personally I'd carry the warmest one possible, I feel it's better to be too warm and able to partially unzip it than to be cold and have to find another way of keeping warm. I had a 'travelpak 4', it was warm enough for the CA coast in December and it's got a mesh cover over the face in case you...

    Port Aransas, TX

nothing wrong with the beach camping there, it's just that Texas beaches suck and are kind of gross (outside of padre). I've spent maybe 8 days ever in port A, but I've spent quite a lot of time around Port Lavaca and the locals there are definitely the type to fuck with dirty kids

    Port Aransas, TX

There's a reason it's free, lol. There's still some alright fishing around and if you can find some sort of transport on water you can camp out in unoccupied fishing shacks on the intercoastal

    Sleeping pads, inflatable or foam?

Inflatables pack down smaller and are warmer imo. They pop if youre just plopping it down without any site prep beforehand, but the patch kits are light and small. Sometimes it can't be patched foam is cool but it doesn't really fit in any of my bags (even the lay flat accordion looking ones)...

Question I'm considering moving StP to a reddit-like open source software alternative; Thoughts?

If ypu decide to migrate to a different platform in the future, what's the future of the current forum? I feel it's a great resource for new travellers and oI'd be really bummed to see it lost, wpuld it be kept around even if in an archived, read-only capacity?

Question I'm considering moving StP to a reddit-like open source software alternative; Thoughts?

i just hate reddit's social credit system, it's rife with abuse and the site is super monotonous. you hear the same shit parroted everywhere because people need to fish for good boy points

Question I'm considering moving StP to a reddit-like open source software alternative; Thoughts?

Reddit is a cesspool and the site design is ass imo. I really dig on the forum style, it's very nostalgic and it makes it easy for people to find what they're looking for. My vote is for whatever is most similar to what there is now

Is there any groups out there, that live deep in the wilderness?

I agree with Down & Out, you're better off getting into trail work/forestry/firefighting. The right job will give you housing on site (though its often seasonal work). After spiking out for 2 weeks you may reconsider wanting to live that way full time. You could also check out www.ic.org Dig...

I'd consider good condition surplus ECWS, and a purpose built tent with a backpacking cot to get off the ground entirely i don't have that much experience with extreme cold that being said

    Snow-birding locations in the summer

I'm in the Sierras in southern California. There's still a ton of snow above 7,000 feet but it's rapidly receding. Just keep an eye on snowfall throughout winter and then keep tabs on the snow levels or temperatures in some high-altitude areas. Idk about snowboarding up here though, it's...

It depends on who you're asking those questions about. The groups with the greatest interest in mass surveillance are likely to be the type of organization with a near limitless budget. Sacramento to Joshua Tree in van- recommended stop along way?

Remington no longer exists. Some drunk asshole slipped, hit his head and died so the police condemned it as a public health hazard and demolished it. Sacramento to Joshua Tree in van- recommended stop along way?

Lake Isabella and the Kern River valley are great. The Hot Springs I loved got destroyed unfortunately (and had become very trashy in the last few years anyways) but there's still tons to do, and it's very beautiful this time of year. There's free camping for up to 2 weeks at the Keyesville...

Question ? Garden on van swing hitch

V4 had a good idea with foraging, if you're in the right area it can provide many of your calories.
