I would imagine most if not all uhauls have some kinda GPS in em. I wouldn't wanna be driving a stolen uhaul half way across the country.

Good luck I guess?

nah, im not aware of uhauls having gps although that could have changed. i've been told tales from other travelers about renting uhauls on bad credit and just living/traveling in them for months until they get repo'd. so i guess anything is possible.

I remember hearing stuff like this too but that was also in the salt water soda machine scam days which was like 20 years ago. I guess I just figured such a large company would of caught up with the times and put tracking stuff in their vehicles.

I mean if they havnt shit right on, Uhaul road trip!

Salt watering soda machines, dude those were the fucking days! We'd make up to 300 dollars a day doing that. Ended up killing the 200ish machines in town and had to take our act on the road till machines were restocked or repaired in town.

These were also pump first then pay for the gas days, so our road trips were free and exciting. Never wanted to spend actual money from the machines so we'd pull into fast food joints and give them the "we came here an hour ago and ordered this this and that, you left out a burrito supreme and a soft taco" fed one person, then onto the next joint "we came here an hour ago and you left out a whopper and medium fry" rinse repeat till all were fed.

Can't pull much of that shit anymore, sadly.

I know someone who got 14 months in Georgia for joy riding in a uhaul for two months after he was supposed to return it. After 72hrs they consider it stolen, as in you get charged with grand theft auto. If they really wanna fuck you they can get you with interstate trafficking of stolen goods. No GPS but they will report it stolen and with plate scanners I doubt you'll be out long.

I briefly traveled in an unreturned U-haul like that once. Bunch of kids, couple dogs and a couch in the back. Was fun seeing the looks we got when we pulled into a truck stop somewhere and the U-haul vommitted all us dirty kids out onto the parking lot

As many weird tolls I passed traveling west coast to east coast and back this spring, I definitely wouldn't feel comfortable in a commandeered U-Haul. I don't know how the fucking things work, they'd route me through certain lanes if i didn't have an express pay type credit card set up and there were never any booths I just assumed I'd get a bill in the mail for them, as the cameras surely took my plates down. I'd have to assume U-Haul has a way of receiving notifications if one of their trucks that's on the lam is knocking down waypoints seemingly with no intent to be returned. That and the likely APB on the plates/description. Nah, wouldn't catch me in that whip, there's easier/safer ways to travel for free. Best of luck though.

This is OP's only post; i'm thinking the cops rolled up just as they were about to type the "t" in "west".

Probably they will never post again, and we will never know.

Typically U-Haul rental locations are out of small mom and pop style franchise locations, I wouldn't encourage anyone to "liberate a U-Haul" totally not worth the potential jail time, and your just screwing over some small time guy....petty theft 4-lyfe.

My input on u-haul equipment is simply put. The company can put your account on what they call an "E-alert" which basically bans you from renting their equipment, or at least until certain criteria is met (wrong dropoff location, past due payments, etc.). It has to be cleared through their system before you are able to rent anything.

I brought the E-alert thing up because my older brother got pissed off after u-haul placed him on an E-alert without a reason. After about more than 20 minutes on the phone with the company, his name was finally cleared.

While this is good to know, im not sure it's really relevant here since op said they stole the truck meaning that uhaul does not have any info about them on file at least regarding this particular truck.
