Xanterra's website has listings for jobs all over the u.s. If you're feeling tepid about starting (like me) then you could scope out a seasonal job for a change of scenery.

I think any activity with the stated objective of "finding yourself" is probably doomed to fail. That's a common element in stories but in real life we're just whatevers.

Honestly find a lot of happiness getting away from the hum drum. Been pretty stagnant myself with a few short trips here and there and whenever I get away I feel a lot better. Trust me when you get out it'll be a breath of fresh air. Winter sucks and thankfully its almost over. Get ready guys.
A good season to you all.
And welcome to the site!

This phrase which Blank has written, there is a whole lot of truth to that.

I've come across people who have been searching for years to figure themselves out, only to arrive back to the beginning again.

For a while, up until recently.... I've longed to move out west, maybe to western Texas... or maybe north west to the U.P. of Michigan, because I'm come to feel stagnant where I'm at but then I think about it some and realize that I got it pretty damn good, and location wise it's still very suitable to/for me...

But, on the other hand.... it must be so exciting to just up and leave, and begin anew !!

Eeew! Work!
Being homeless is a full time job. If you not making money you spending it. No work no food or beer.

Start by getting your equipment together and practice how to use them.

Research research research! I read every thread on this damn site for months before actually taking off. Put together a good little pack. Met my first road dogs through here actually.

A good way to test the waters after getting your gear together is pretty simple; if you live in an area where it's possible, go camping on weekends! I really like public campgrounds that are a little remote, but have plenty of travelers, full time or not, coming through. You're generally more likely to find folks in that kind of environment are friendly and open to talking to their camping neighbors, and you'll make some cool connections. You can test your gear and survival skills, and your networking and socialization skills at the same time. Summer is coming up, and if you do it enough you're bound to meet some people to talk to about their experiences, maybe even someone to travel with. You don't have a car, so post on craigslist or local FB rideshare groups to get a ride out to the campground, or take city buses as far as you can and then hitch there and back. It'll give you a taste for what it's like without the commitment.

Example: When I hit the road with some folks I met on StP in 2010 we pretty much went straight to the hot springs in Oregon, and camped out near them. Met one of my best friends to this day there, who lived in the area and housed up travelers she met at the springs all the time, and she ended up hooking me up with all sorts of knowledge and connections.

Get an EBT card and dumpster pizza chains like littles caesars or dominoes. Maybe hitchike to work in a neighboring state. Always keep an eye out for good places to sleep when walking around.

I wouldn't have high expectations about finding yourself or solving life problems. Its a different lifestyle with different kinds of problems. Sometimes you'll feel free and sometimes its kinda dismal. Atleast ime.
