Hye, figured I'd throw my introduction out into the wind!

My name is Katerina, I'm a 20 year old female from Massachusetts, and I've been trying to get out of my small suburban town. I've got little money, but the spirit and heart of someone willing to seek the best out of life.

I've had a lot of experience hiking and camping in the woods, and hitchiked around the state a bit. But I'm here to learn the ropes more and give trainhopping a shot, lurking for advice and seeking a local mentor, as well as a dirty kids community to help along my journey.

I wouldn't recommend hopping out in the New England winter, especially not for your first time. It's already brutally cold doing anything there, and train hopping has a way of making the elements more extreme. Hitchhiking wouldn't be a bad idea, or searching for rides offered on Craigslist (obviously do your due diligence, yada yada). If you make it to Boston, you can take Chinatown buses to NYC and then to DC, anywhere from 25-50 bucks altogether, and then you're on the doorstep of VA. (I've seen crazy 5 dollar deals on Wanderu, so long as you're not picky about time)

Hey I'm from NH so just above you. Thought I'd say what's up. My boyfriend and I are trying to get out of New England as well. We dont have any necessary destination but we just want to head South or West. We are easy going ready to see life for the simple things. We got a little bit of money also but were ready to help out fellow travelers in anyways. If you end up heading south soon let us know we might want to join!!!

Check out Flixbus and megabus for cheap bus tickets. They don't go everywhere but they do serve a lot of the east coast. I've seen a lot of slash- through- thumb "no hitchhiking" signs in Virginia so just be aware that state and their cops probably wont be too friendly to hitchers.

Thanks for the tip! Good to know when to watch where I hitch. Looking for a group, but anything to get me on the doorstep of VA helps a lot.

Do you know if there are any rails I could hitch? Theres one through worcester but its hard to track.

youll have better luck hitching without a group. one more person max.

you might wanna leave those trains alone for the time being.

Theres a few connecting CsX lines that go all the way to west virginia and one from worcester goes to NY
okay so let me get this straight you're prepared in the dead of winter to ride over to Selkirk you know next to nothing about trains as far as I can tell and then you're going to somehow figure out how to get a train down the Hudson and then down through Richmond correct?

West Virginia and Southeast Virginia are two completely different places.
first off, you would have to catch a train over to Selkirk and then switch lines and go down the Hudson and then down the seaboard line via Jersey Baltimore and then Richmond.
considering you don't really know how to ride trains you would have a hard time making headway with this.
Not to mention Worcester is a very easy place to hop out of what you don't want to really go that way because it's going to take you out somewhere cold.
You would simply be better off to catch a Chinatown bus downtown to New York and then maybe hop south from there for Philly.
Anyways, I'm done with this.
there are no trains from Worcester to Virginia except via Selkirk and then you would have to double back and go down the Hudson.
Whoever gave your comment a thumbs-up is an idiot.
Not to mention it is the dead of winter and you don't even know how to ride trains.

Yo @Travelisinvigorating OP clearly did some research on the lines and isn't wrong about the lines she wrote about

Also there is a train that goes from Worcester to NJ and wouldn't require switching in Selkirk
There is? Ok, well that's new to me. I've never heard on anybody getting on any train out of Worcester that went to New Jersey via Selkirk.
