Hi everyone. I'm 18 now and for months I have thought about leaving home and seeing the world. I'm just bored with life and the same places. I'm from Finland, so I still have to serve in the army for a while. I thought it would be good to give myself a head start and begin to learn about travelling and hitchhiking early.

I want to travel the world to see amazing places and meet even more amazing people. Would be great if I could make some like-minded friends from here.

in general you can't go too wrong going further from what's familiar at your age

until then there's some good info here you can search for

how long do you need to serve for, at this point?

I can choose between 6 months and a full year. Not yet sure which one. I'll see how much time I need to prepare.

That is not much time at all, you'll be departing before you know it. As for preparation - well living rough or at least being cam to travel without luxury is - to me - not too hard to understand, what is challenging is experience itself which of course in this life never ends.

I've never visited Asia, so that is quite high on the list.

same here. I understand we as westerners cannot find a more extreme culture shock than India offers, also it is incredibly diverse in both ppl culture and microclimates...so that's where i will go first if I go to Asia...Japan also very appealing but almost for the opposite reasons..

This is a great book to get your hands on. It discusses traveling the world without having a real job. It goes beyond a lot of the things you'll read on this forum about trainhopping\hitchhiking and talks more in depth about traveling the world at large.
