Hey Guys! | Squat the Planet

Hey Guys!

Hey! I'm looking for tips for a first time traveler! This sounds so juvenile but I'd have to "run away from home."
I'm quite young so I want to stay safe, also looking for a buddy who would travel with me. As long as y'all aren't awkward with 14 year olds.

im sure this is not what you want to hear, but at 14 you just arnt capable of being anything besides a huge liability to anybody who wanted to travel with you.

not to mention the stuff that a adult who wanted to travel with a 14 year old runaway brings to mind.

what is yer home situation that is so bad?

That is good advice I guess..I don't even know if I'm going to live long enough to need a diploma and I'd rather live in the moment? ::meh::

Fuck...I guess, thinking about my future, I'd probably need a diploma to get a stable job. <-- As much as that's the mindset I want to avoid ~_~

you have the rest of yer life to live in the moment. dont run away just because you think it sounds fun right now. being 14 years old and homeless would be nothing like a days n daze song.

you made it seem like a now kinda thing by saying you were wanting to run away from home and that you were 14. finish high school, or at the very least get a ged, and not just because its a useless piece of paper but living a few more years with some more real life responsibility will show you that life in general isnt as easy as you may think.

Yeah, I swear I've been thinking this over for a long time, but hearing another perspective from someone else seems to clarify shit. Feels like I'm wasting my life away though..::meh::

If my advice is wanted... The time you have now is no doubt gonna feel endless and miserable at times but every emotion/situation is temporary. There's a lot of things to learn and experience now before you leave and go travel. Your lows will come with highs and you'll learn so damn much in the next 4 years. That knowledge will help prepare for whatever you decide is next. Take this time to grow. The road isn't going anywhere, the time you have now you can never redo.

1. Don't run away from home. Coming from someone who grew up in an abusive home, look for legal options to leave. Grandparents? Aunts? Uncles? Foster cares (Yes they suck but often times they are the better option)? School guidance counselors to help unfuck your head if your caregivers are really sucky.

2. If you get caught traveling with anyone and you are under the age of 18 they WILL go to jail. If you get caught traveling with a man over the age of 18 even if he has never touched you in any way the cops will do everything in their power to put a "Kidnapping rapist" behind bars.

3. Being a vagabond is extremely <18 UNFRIENDLY. The traveling life is extremely dangerous, go look in the obituary section, that's maybe 10% of the travelers who have died. The younger you are and the younger you look the more dangerous it is.

Okay quick story time. I used to run away from home for days at a time (See abusive household in my point 1). I got drugged, raped, and taken to the middle of nowhere where I was 100% sure I was going to get murdered before I talked my rapist into driving back to town by saying my phone had a GPS in it. That kind of shit is unbelievably common for young girls to experience when they run away from home. No one should ever have to deal with that. Please don't run away from home.

4. I didn't think I'd live to see my high school diploma, either. I now have two bachelor's degrees. Get the diploma and then hit the road if you still want to hit the road at 18. No one can take your diploma away from you once you have it, but you can't get a high school diploma if you drop out or wait too long.

5. I understand that feeling of being bored and feeling like you're wasting your life. I promise you, being in high school, as much of a waste as it feels, is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It might seem hard, but go learn instruments, or learn another language. You're brain is more pliant right now than anytime in your future. It will be ten times harder to learn useful skills after your mid-twenties (But not impossible by any stretch of the imagination, I just wish I had put more effort into learning instruments ten years ago instead of now). Learn how to crochet some badass things or make soaps and sell them on Etsy. You don't have to just travel to find purpose in life, hobbies are important, and useful hobbies are badass as Hell and follow you everywhere.

6. There's nothing wrong with checking out these forums, even if you still have to wait to actually do it. Hell, maybe you'll decide it is for you and you'll be the best traveler ever once you hit 18 and you're ready. Maybe you'll decide it's not for you and find some other way to feel like you're living a meaningful life. Whatever you choose, just don't run away from home.
