Had I a thousand dollars more than I do, I'd get a plane to your side of the world and offer my companionship in an instant. Though I won't, because I can't. Maybe next time.

You seem pretty serious about it, had I ever hitchhiked in US I'd give you all the advice I have. But I haven't so I don't know which advise to really give.

@glowbug is there anything in particular, that you are worrying about or would like advice on? Anything you're not quite sure of? Because I'm sure we're all more than willing to offer you our complete rucksack of knowledge of life on the road.

Were you the Reddit post where someone posted links to serial killers and shit saying this could be you type stuff? Anyway my advice to you is be very decisive about where you get dropped off. Make it clear before you get in the car. and if you start to feel sketched out you can always say stop the car. If they refuse you crash that mofo haha. Remember predators seek out weakness so stay strong and keep your wits about you. some people may offer that you come to their house for a meal or place to sleep, ive accepted both but im not a pretty girl. If your instincts allow you to accept something like this make sure you know exactly where youre going, check on gps to make sure, youre going where the driver says, and text the address to a friend. most of all have fun. The lows will make the highs that much better. Sorry for the rant haha take care

keep in mind that it's possible to get cheap/free rideshares on CL pretty easily as well.

also, i have female friends that hitchhike alone in places not even I have the balls to hitch alone as a guy (mexico?), so don't let anyone tell you that you can't. just read up as much as you can on hitchhiking safety and you should be fine.

also, mace. it's great to have no matter what your gender is.

I'm really looking for advice in general, since this is all new to me. But a big question I have is how do you guys make this kind of travel sustainable? Is it worth it? And what kind of struggles do you regularly encounter on the road? How do you deal with those struggles? Thank you :)

Mexico, that's impressive. I'd love to do that one day.

Yeah, I plan on getting mace, and maybe a pocket knife or something. Thanks :)

Well, I bet everyone have their own way of sustaining themselves one the road. For my personal addition to this, I've been really cheeky most of my days on the road, kinda just accepting free stuff, and kind of expecting others generosity to keep me well fed. - it doesn't alqways keep me well fed, but sometime I've been fed quite well.. Knocking on doors at farms getting homemade bread and salami has happened, fruit trees,, sandwiches at the highways... Also dumpsterdiving have served me well.
"Is it worth it" - every, single, bit of it! Nothing is worse, i think, to be 35 and realise that you never had the courage/time/reason/w/e to do it.

I've encountered struggles of various kinds while on the road. Namely loneliness, questioning my sanity, questioning my spiritual welfare, doubting myself, relying on chance. I guess I've just dealth with every situation for my own best, finding the best suited ways for myself to get out of it.

Also to add, speaking with elderly, or people who seem wise on life, have served me a great deal of release, just to get my thoughts vented and maybe see a fresh perspective on things.

Would you say that more people are generous when you're out there than you would expect? I met this guy that said he was amazed by how many people were inviting him into their home, feeding him, and giving him money when he first started traveling.

Yeah, I have this fear of wasting my life/youth which is a big reason I've decided to start traveling, while I'm young and able. Loneliness is a thing for me, so I'm hoping I get the chance to meet up with a lot of like-minded people. And I already question my sanity at home so not too worried about that lol. I'm really excited to meet people and learn things from them, hear their stories. Like you said, a fresh perspective is always nice.

I definitely agree indisputable with your friends viewpoint on this, it's like when you're traveling people tend to have a certain kind of attraction to you, also I think you're having feeling of adventure, discovery and passion. And that this in relation comes back as generosity, somehow people would like you to have a glimpse of their life so that you'll bring their generosity with you in your backpack wherever you'll go. It's kind of their way to travel, seeing you'll most likely only meet them once, it's also a time for many where they open up and discuss very personal and affectionate parts of their own life, and also of yours. Usually its some very sweet and endearing encounters with a very broad spectrum of people, so that afterwards you'll know that there's good people in all neighborhoods.

Surely you're going to meet a lot of people on your way, and I sincerely hope for you that you take people advices into account, to travel with people who will be good and kind towards you. I've been wanting to ask you how old you are, but it doesn't really matter, you just look so young and in ways innocent. I'm wandering off a bit, but yeah getting that wind in your hair standing at the side of some road with your thumb flying high is definitely going to help you get out of that fear of you wasting your youthhood. ;)

My personal advice:
If you want to see most or all of the US, go North during the summer and South during the winter. Coming from someone who does live in the North there is nothing pleasant about our winters.
Also, have you seen the little mini tasers? You can get some that come with flashlights, they're only about twenty bucks or so and they can drop a man (Or woman) to the ground if he/she gets creepy with you.

You look and seem like a pretty awesome lady. If you're in the Oregon area don't be afraid to hit any of the Oregonians on this site up, including me. Oregon is just a big wanna-be Canada with some of the friendliest people I've ever met.
