I am leaving for New Orleans Dec 8th-Mar 2 and will be spending most my time in the St Claude neighbourhood (hope I got that right) By Florida Ave and Louisa St. Just want to get some opinions about the neighbourhood, I will be walking alone on many occasions and I hear a lot about the 8th and 9th ward being dangerous..My plan is just to smile big and keep my head up really. Npt gunna walk at night, no back alleys. All the basic obvious stuff. Is there anything I should know about where I'm staying in? Thanks a lot =)

I lived in New Orleans for a few years. There are plenty dainty white girls living in all areas, and you shouldn't have much of a problem if you don't interact excessively with the neighborhood thugs. Try to be indoors at night.

one thing most people don't know about new orleans is that there are no alleys. it's kind of strange at first, but you get used to it.

No back alleys is weird O__O Thanks for the info, was curious if anyone has stayed in the neighbourhood mentioned specially, I know the city isn't as dangerous as most make it out to be if you are not an idiot.

I call B.S. on this "crime wise" comment. Are you f*ckin' kidding me? Or your more naive than most. Much of the crime these days is cause by gutter-punks aggressively pan-handling and when they don't get their way, they lash out. I know this, I have witnessed it on MANY occasions. NOLA, specifically the Quarter has become a f*ckin' squatting zoo for those *ssholes. Don't come to NOLA if your going to trash it and disrespect it. There is no money for you here, move on. All you do is sit on your lazy *sses with your "feed me" signs at every Square block. Damned trust fund, runaway, not wanting a job, living off of those who actually have a desire to work. GROW UP. Period. Most of the time, they cause the crime... yeah. Other than the hood-rats.

Try and say NOLA is safe... the f*ck ever. We're the most violent city in the Nation next to Detroit. Again... if your trying to make someone comfortable enough to live here, you've obviously never lived here.

Don't try to take advantage of a city that you haven't done research on. Settle down, get a job, rent an apt. Or, GTFO... 'nuff said. Don't harrass the locals.

S'up bromeo! Welcome to the site. I'm digging the badass stance that you have on gutterpunks causing trouble throughout New Orleans. I've lived there, working and living uptown with the yuppies, and running with that tough crowd on the other side: proprietors of the squatting zoo! Those straws breaking the camel's back, the curiosity that killing all the cats, the bulls in our china shops and the big fish in the small pond of New Orleans!

We're horrible, aren't we? Obviously we are the ones causing all the crime, with our massive amounts of money bringing all the weapons and drugs into the city, right? Since most of the violent crime in the city is black-on-black, obviously our bodies being covered in coal would include us in the group!

Wait, would it? Share some more opinions with us, you randy devil! ;) I'm down for some light discourse.

I don't have to "lightly step on" sh*t. But, you see what I mean... regarding my last post. There you have it, admittance that gutter-punks are NOT nice, nor decent. By the by... I have had this account for a year now. I rarely post, I just lurk. But when someone tries to mess with the city that I call home, I deal with it accordingly. Screw that. The Squater's need to get jobs, quit being wastes and actually work for their living, instead of living off of someone elses dollar.

And don't ever call me, "Bromeo" again. You don't know me... but you obviously have the internet and a cell phone, so you know what that term means. Yuppies calling the kettle black, this is surreal. Which one is it, trust fund babies out to explore the world, or are squaters just runaways that can't deal with their own lives...?

Band me from the site, I couldn't care less. Call me a troll. It really doesn't matter. I talk shit because I'm tired of the f*ckin' Squaters in NOLA who think they can get away with living off of everyone else and not take responsibility for their own actions. GROW UP! If you knew me in person, I don't just talk shit...

But, what ever floats your boat. So I'm told. What, don't like the truth? Squater's are literally the most violent people in our city next to the ghetto sh*t bags. If you don't like Squaters law, it's time for an *ss kicking, right? The hell ever... I just call it like I see it. Even your ratings of "stupid" and "dislike" ... of course you do... again, the truth hurts. The actual residents of the city don't like gutter-punks. Don't get pissy when someone actually talks sh*t in person, it was going to happen anyway. What did they expect? A nice welcome and a free handout? Sh'yeah... get a f*ckin' job. Their more than capable.

Thanks for that warning about my next post... I appreciate it. Hell of a cop-out for those who replied.

okay, so i was mistaken about your sign up date, but whatever. the point is that you're way off topic for this thread.

and the thing is, i don't really disagree with you. the 'gutter-punks' in nola are becoming a problem, not just for the local residents, but for the traveler community as well (they're making things harder for the rest of us and making us look bad). if you would like to debate this topic in a productive manner, please create a separate thread for it.

also, there's a big difference between squatters, real travelers, and gutter punks.

Yikes! While I do agree that a large number of people (in general actually) suck... it's kind of weird that you join a site that is made for the kind of people you seem to despise. Honestly if you joined to 'protect your city', kicking and screaming on an online forum is not gunna do anything. So ... O__o I'm confused why you're here. Cause right now it seem to only be to be rude to people and fly off the handle at small things.

Anyways. I was in NOLA for 7 weeks in total, staying in the Upper 9th ward and only once did I feel like I was in danger...and it was a guy in a fancy car following me demanding a blowjob for money.
I was lucky, because I did see a lot of crime and heard about a lot of shit getting stolen. One of our bikes was stolen from our backyard. But I think luck and exposure has a huge part to play on crime. If you're buying drugs from shady people, going to spots with obvious crime blah blah...you're chances are much higher. Whether it be from gutter punks, or other criminals. Somehow I managed to stay safe in Nola for 7 weeks all on my lonesome and with no travel experience. So, it's not a dire situations where you're for sure gunna get killed, it's not a battleground of street wars and blood everywhere. The mail-man still comes every morning, people buy groceries and go to coffee shops. It's just life with more crime and it really bothers me that people are fear mongers about life.

ok ill take the bait.

no im not kidding you when i said its not as bad crime wise as most people make it out to be, and the agressive pan handling was what i was talking about. unless nola has really become a zoo as you put it ive never been threatened by gutter punks anywhere for not kicking down, even in big bad scary nola.

as you can see from the OP posting that she indeed managed to stay safe in nola for 7 weeks with no travel experience maybe you are the one going out and looking for trouble or possibly just hanging around to many trouble makers who as you put it "sit on your lazy asses with feed me signs".

as for calling people flying signs trust funders i think you might be a bit backwards...its usually those who have money who arnt flying signs, people with money in my experience generally stay away from flying signs especially in nola since last time i was there it was a nice easy way to get thrown in opp.

yer absolutly right, i have never lived in nola, i spent a week there around new years eve a few years back and absolutly hated it. not my city. i agree with you, too many aggro gutter punks, too easy to pick up a half empty beer every 2 minutes and end up shit faced before noon. and again, i completly agree with you about haressing locals, but theres a line between flying a sign/busking (which correct me if im wrong mr or mrs all that is nola, isnt nola a very big busker city?) and being aggro crack spanging people. i have more then the average respect for locals in every town i roll through. but from the interaction ive had with you over the internet you seem like the kind of person who likes to start shit with non locals with the old "THIS IS MY CITY DURR BURR" attitude.

i am curious as to why you signed up for a website called squat the planet to complain about this kind of stuff though. maybe next time im in nola i can sleep on yer couch and eat all yer food?

NOLA is a place where demons are free to walk about. I doubt any traveler would deny the violence, regardless of the guilty party. Perhaps we have varying opinions on what actual violence is. Either way, New Orleans is a place for the world's characters to gather. It has been a travelers city since the French took it from the indians. The city is what it is because of the collection of immigrants, French elitists and travelers. Buskers are a part of the city. Gutter punks are a part of the city. The kids with the "feed me" and "left over" signs are actually looking for a good meal. Why the fuck not? Some of the best food in the world comes out of those kitchens. It is the choice of the tourists and locals to give and I have seen nothing but kindness among both groups.

It seems you have a jaded opinion on what the actual traveler community is about. I doubt you get to see the days when dogs eat and the owners don't. Maybe you have never seen a kid run a mile through the forest in the middle of the night to deliver a cigarette, all because someone asked. It is a multi-dimensional family where everyone finds a place. Even the ones you deem to be less respectful are welcomed. You don't know their story or any of ours.

There are shit heads in every community. I bet I can find a child molester, rapist or murderer living within 5 miles of you. Those are far worse crimes than getting drunk and starting a brawl with a frat boy talking shit. Be thankful that there are some pirates in your city; they keep the real fuck-tards from making an appearance.

Some of us have chosen to live outside of whatever you believe to be real happiness. Are we all assaulting pedestrians when they deny a spange line? Fuck no! The ones who do make it a lot harder for the rest of us and don't generally stay on the road very long.

If you don't like living amongst the traveling folk, get the fuck out of NOLA. It is as much our city as it is yours. If I can do it with nothing but a few bucks that a tourist gave me, then you should be good.

I wound up being in St. Claude's for New Years last year! I didn't feel threatened - at first I was in the French Quarter but I didn't want to drown in the drunk parade, so I made my way on up... There were so many neighborhood kids creating these great firecracker fountains in the street. I wound up helping this drunk older woman find her house, also finding a PERFECTLY GOOD XL frozen pizza on the sidewalk (with sausage, peppers and onions! still packaged!), baking the pizza in her oven, smoking her cigarettes and sleeping on her couch.

I've done a little busking in NOLA (hardly made anything, lol) but I wouldn't feel comfortable spanging there...
I think this is a great commentary on crime, state violence, and post-Katrina "redevelopment" in the city, I'd recommend anyone reads it who has a minute:

According to the FBI (who's way better than you at compiling statistical information) New Orleans didn't even make the top 20:

On topic, sounds like you had a good time @MirandaLeigh!

For those of you who respectfully replied... it is called (hispter-ish), "Creating Awareness." I don't have a problem with the buskers who do actual work to make a quick buck. You all, already know about my irritation. I'm not just a kid (kicking and screaming) or so a few of you replied as such. No. The last few posts is to "Create Awareness" regarding those who would take advantage of this city of OURS which is NOLA. The few of you obviously regarded my point, and I thank you for that. But... most of you so called, "travelers" are often times (more often than not) mistaken for the wasters/gutter trash. Try not to blend in so much with the "green, smelly...railroad inbound wearing, clothing that most of those types have as wardrobe, They all look alike and have very bad "cardboard signs". Again, I stand by my statement of ... get a job, or GTFO. This city has politics that are still unresolved regarding NOPD and NOFD, that I don't need to get into. Try not to take advantage of a city that has a mass of unresolved issues, politically. Common sense is a necessity as well as etiquette. Respect is earned.

For those of whom replied in a not so graceful manner... kids, calling the kettle black... f*ck you, very much. Reach 30+ years of age and get back to me... maybe then, we might carry on with more of a suitable conversation, or debate.

Finally, for that individual who asked why I signed up for this site? I like to keep an "eye" out for shit talkers who want to take advantage of a place that I call home. No other way to do this, than to sign up for an "eyes wide open" place such as Squat the Planet... to keep tabs. Wouldn't you agree? I AM an ambassador for THIS city that I CALL HOME that is NEW ORLEANS. No one can call me wrong for doing what I feel as necessary or important. Can they...

I've already asked that you create another thread for this.

Second, StP isn't your place to 'spy' on the traveling community. Also, the people you purport to hate so much don't even come to this website (are there dozens of gutter punks at the library scrambling to get on StP? no, they're on decatur drinking and bugging people for change), so you're a bit of a fool for even spending this much time harassing people and talking shit to strangers on the internet that have nothing to do with your problem.

you'd appear more sane if you went and yelled at a cactus or for a while.

Banning @Soulshroude and locking this thread, since it has essentially reached the end of it's usefulness.
