Yeah I have absolutely no clue what put it in his head to use another traveler's near death experience to take a stab at me for how I acquire money, then furthermore imply she's gonna go uncared for because of how I fund my travels.

I was really digging this thread before it was derailed like a freight train headed to Dallas.(Too soon?)
I would like to hear more about people philosophy with money and the road, it's very interesting.
Personally I hate money. Its NEVER LAST LONG!

I hitched down to Austin not too long ago and I was hanging out with the street kids on 6th.
This "yuppie" College kid was asking a train-hopper how to be a traveler, how to hitch,
train hop and all that good stuff.
Final the train hopper cut the kid off and told him this.
"You wanna travel like this? first thing you do is sell and give away everything you own and save up a bunch of money for you travels then just hit rode and blow it all in 1st month of getting all your new friends high and drunk."

That sums it up for me. I rather have a good time right now then hoard away a lot of money for later.

@Trvshwvng sorry I was way out of line. I was really pissed off about some shanangans involving some ass hole I hosted freaking out on acid running naked thru were I'm posted, drawing attention to me, and the fact I have not paid any dues. Now I have to leave my pretty much perfect spot. Sorry for venting my frustrations onto you, that was harsh, unfair, and unnecessary.

I've had problems with flying off the handle here recently as well. All just because of negative circumstance. If that's the case, I get it and I'm sorry some douche blew up your spot. I appreciate you being honest and coming around. Not a people pleaser, but i hate to have enemies because of a misunderstanding. It's all forgiven, lets be cool from here on, man.

I've left once from Arkansas to California with only about 50 in my pocket, it's easy to be careful spending, get food if you need it from the dollar menu, from a dollar store, heck even from vending machines. I've had several people in my journeys just walk up to me and hand me a 5-20 without ever talking to me, or me holding a sign they just see the way I'm in at times and help me out if I need it. And before I would ever go spanging I would exhaust all options first check for a plasma bank some don't have out of state restrictions, or go for a day labor place, anything to keep from being harassed by the cops. If you do have to spange, put it in a way that you're asking for donations because with the police there's a legal way around it so you don't get busted for panhandling.

Clip the sign to your pack as ya walk, that bypasses most panhandling laws which state "passively standing or sitting while displaying blah blah" if you're that worried about it. Also, it clearly states in most ordinances that the panhandler intends to receive donations, so you're not getting out of anything by rewording signs as a "statement of being". Homebums try to use that argument all the time and ya know what happens? I watch the cops cart em off to jail all the same. So yeah in a perfect world that would work but unfortunately that's not the function of law enforcement in this country. Just being realistic here. Fly the sign and if a cop asks tell him you're just passing through and apologize. Make sure to keep $5 so there's no question of vagrancy. They'll let ya go if you don't act like an idiot and start arguing about technicalities. They don't wanna hear it and you'll get cuffed nice and easy because even if you're not breaking the law, they'll make some shit up to detain you and make your life a little harder .

I've never been locked up for flying a sign, crack spanging, nothing. It just isn't something to worry about if you compose yourself correctly. I spange almost every single day with very very few problems.

You can fly signs and spange, work temporary odd jobs, busk, make arts and crafts, etc. One thing I learned in my travels is always try to help people out because you never know when you'll really need it. I don't spange and most the time I travel I have money, but there have been occasions where I didn't and I always gave back somehow by helping other people out whether travelers, home bums or whatever label you want to put on people. There is no exact amount. Traveling is an art and you have to figure it out by stepping outside of that box we call society.
