Traveling with small animals

Throughout my insomnia I've been thinking about traveling with small animals i.e. bugs, lizards, fish, etc.

While I suppose they'd be cheaper to feed I'm not sure how easy it would be to keep them in a manageable tank/cage.

I mean it'd be great to carry around a madagascar hissing cockroach but they do need room and carrying around a small terrarium doesn't seem too reasonable. Same thing with fish. I love fish but I doubt I could carry around a small fish bowl or whatever. I know betta fish don't need alot of space but how little is too little? Wasn't there a scene in some Tom Hanks movie where he carried around a fish in a little bottle? Would that work?

Also what about reptiles? Would it be possible to carry around a reptile? How small of a space can they live in?

If anyone has any experience taking small pets traveling let me know.

So what do you guys think? Any suggestions on taking fish, reptiles bugs etc?

For the most part, the temperature changes/extremes and the movement cause a lot of stress on the animal or bug. Your little critter probably won't tolerate much travel without croaking (even if it isn't a frog). I've thought of flying a sign with a stuffed animal as a prop but haven't done it. It would be a lot easier to care for than a real dog, plus I could take it anywhere and it wouldn't ever piss or shit in the wrong spot. Since nobody flies a sign with a stuffed animal, I think it might net some good kicks. Also, if it dies just throw it in the dumpster and get another. Or, just put it on a train like a Hobo burial of some sort.

Yeah I was going to respond the same as mmmmmmmichael. I've had several lizards and frogs in my lifetime and they are quite temperature needy. Snakes - temperature needy too - have had a few - had a south american boa - got her at 16" and she grew to 10-1/2' (hehe that is no traveling pet though). There are some here who have/are traveling with rats - seen a few ferrets mentioned here too. Saw a guy in Toronto traveling with several pet rats. Maybe some of them may chime in. Try also looking in the Furry Nomad section too to see about the rat/ferret pets too - have seen some stuff there.

Where the hell do you get a Madagascar hissing cockroach from? Seen my share of cockroaches but none of them hissed at me. Bugs normally don't scare me but a hissing cockroach, oh I know I'm off topic but a hissing cockroach.

I cant see the value in taking a pet hostage on the road. I see way too many people who go from pet to pet often having a different dog, cat, rat etc every few months. I see some pathetic types who justify that they receive more kickdowns & rides because they are traveling with a pet. There is constant drama surrounding travelers & pets where so & so gets arrested & the pet runs the risk of going to the pound or being destroyed so another traveler takes temporary care of the pet. Then they get attached or the pet gets stolen, lost killed & now you have people who are willing to kill to get revenge for their lost pet. The reality is that bringing the pet on the road runs the risk of being irresponsible pet ownership at times.

I personally like not having the added responsibilty & the solitude from not traveling with a pet. I had an indoor housecat ::cat:: that I loved but it died from an illness & my wife has a lapdog (chihuahua) & my daughter has a hamster & I see how close they are to those pets. I doubt that they could travel for any length of time without the companionship of their pets. I completely understand their feelings about their beloved pets but then again they arent travellers. Since you dont actually have a specific pet allegiance already than why now? Have you ever even traveled before? or cared for a pet in a controlled environment(like a home) How would you travel with a fish? ::meh:: Do you have some aversion to being alone?::dummy::

There are quite a few specialty pet stores that 'em. I had a friend back in middle school who had one. That was a while back though and I don't know if the laws have changed in cali. I know in Florida you need a license to own one.

@highwayman I've had pet's pretty much all my life but I do see what you mean.

I've done a bit of hitchhiking (not to long of a distance) and I used to know some people who hopped trains.

I think I might have been a little delusion Due to not being able to sleep when I thought it would be possible to take a fish on the road.

I'm not 100% sure I will take a pet traveling but who knows.

I have met a few who travel with rats that live inside their pockets & clothing but they pee everywhere & carry the bubonic plague. Im all set with rats too.

No, of course. I plan on hitchhiking until I can find someone to show me the basics. I wouldn't train hop on internet knowledge alone...

Riding trains does allow lots of sleep, tho. i like how you have a healthy fear of riding trains as we all should. Regardless if you catch your first ride solo or with a seasoned mentor and you yourself eventually spend years riding trains; keeping that fear & safely working with it will be a good tool.. That fear will keep you alert & alive. Peace be with you @SnakeOilWilly

I've met some folks who've traveled with rats & cats, but dogs are the most common traveling animal companions. I met a guy who traveled with a ferret once, the ferret was pretty cool, but my cur wanted to eat him...

I saw a baby goose get separated from it's gaggle by a passing train and after an unsuccessful attempt to reunite them, we decided to keep the little guy.
a few days later we were at my grandfathers farm, the goose was in a cardboard box where it had been sleeping the night before and I was cooking breakfast. the goose started going crazy peeping so I put it in the bed with my girlfriend who was still sleeping and it calmed down. the goose would chase after her and follow her around like she was it's mom, it was genuinely adorable.

about half an hour later i get called to the other room and it sounded like something had upset meri, when I got to the room the goose was dead on the bed and meri had tears in her eyes. i guess she had rolled over onto the goose and suffocated it. we buried Beltane (the goose) on my grandfathers land and said our sad goodbyes.

TLDR- I traveled with a Canadian goose for a few days and then killed it accidentally.
