  • Turned 40 today. Also started one of my favorite winter gigs, house/dog/goat/chicken sitting at a beautiful place in the woods.

Dogs are fine company on a day I never expected to see.
First round of upgrades are done on the Krampus. Got some studded tires so I can ride over the winter and get my legs in shape. Some Wah Wah pedals in purple, naturally. A few Oveja Negra bags arrived today and I'm impressed with the quality. Probably going to get their seat bag and backpack before long. Definitely a shock downsizing from a 44L backpack, but the benefits of wheeled transportation will be worth it.

Nice! I'm considering the Wildgear Designs Penta Tarp and net tent, but would prefer a little more coverage. He's working on a storm door design but it isn't ready yet. What I really want is a pyramid tarp + 1/2 net tent for when the bugs are bad, then switch to a bivy if not. Everything I've found is stupid expensive though.

Wildgear handmade designs looks awesome, thanks for sharing that. Definitely inspiring for someday trying to sew my own gear, too....!
Well my plans to leave didn't quite pan out, landed a fairly cushy job for the winter. It's allowed me to buy a used 2015 Surly Krampus to make into a touring/bikepacking rig. Current reworked plan is to ride across the northern US in the spring and summer, before heading south to UT/CO/NM/AZ for the fall and winter.

It was $750 and is in good shape. I need to budget for a couple component upgrades plus storage. My camping gear all fits in a 44L backpack with room for a few days of food. Hoping to get away with seat, frame, and front bags. Would like to avoid big panniers.
Noticed a kindle credit on my account, The Anarchist's Guide to Travel is finally in my library 👍
