  • Taking a break in Talkeetna while figuring things out.
Been spinning my wheels in Anchorage lately. Looked after some much needed dental work at UAA. Some of it had to be put off for a week as I was in the dental chair during the quake. That was some day...
Finished working in Dutch Harbor. In Anchorage for now.

Working at a fish processing plant? How’d it go?

Okay. it is what it is and could have been a busier season. I usually go out to the same place because I know the people and the routine and they are good people there. You work when there is fish and if there's no fish, no work. Regular shifts are from 12 hours and can go up to 18 when needed. Usually when the crab boats are in. Dutch Harbor has some stores and businesses but it is pricey.
Managed to get a pic up from last year. Looking down towards Westward Seafoods where I have finished yet another season this week.
Been trying to upload a new cover pic of where I am in Unalaska but it isn't working.

Managed to upload a pic I took this time last year. Westward Seafoods where I have been working. Looking north along Captains Bay.

I was getting an error message that the image was too large.

I have a different camera this year with a full frame sensor. It was those pics that wouldn't upload. Last years pics where taken from a camera with a cropped sensor. That seems to have been the difference.

I took this cover pic while hiking in the hills last year behind the plant on my last day here. Never thought I'd be back.

Here I am after another season enjoying a rest on my last week-end here. Might hike again but it is too rainy at the moment.
Is there anything to do on your downtime? I don't know if I could spend more than a few weeks on a barren, treeless island especially in the winter

Sleeping mostly. Read. Take pictures. Visit the Norwegian Rat Saloon. Usually working lots though this winter was slow for crab and cod. Quotas had been reduced. It is beautiful here in a cold rainy treeless bleak sort of way. Downtime equals rest in this line of work. Internet is expensive. There are T.V's in the breakroom. I'm out of here in a couple of days as the season is over.
Been working in Dutch Harbor this winter. Slow season. Almost done.
If you don't mind me asking, where are you going to work this winter in Alaska? I worked there this summer and was contemplating going back.

I've worked for Westward Seafoods in Dutch Harbor before and maybe going back with them again in January. They are doing an orientation in Lakewood tomorrow morning for people who have completed their application.

Cool. I worked at Silver Bay in Naknek this summer.
L.A. was too expensive for me for now. Going back to Alaska and cannery work for the winter. Hanging out in Seattle at the moment.

It's cold, boring and monotonous. Long hours which is tiring but the only way to make money. If there's not a lot of fish you don't make the hours.

Every season is different. I've been doing it too long and tired of it. 'Once more unto the breach...'

The seasons are uneven. this summer salmon season was good. The year before it was awful. I could've extended to stay for cod and crab this fall but took off at the end of August. big mistake. I needed to save more money.
    Hanging out in North Hollywood.
The cover photo is a view of Denali and the Alaska Range from the Susitna River in Talkeetna.
