I have two experiances with this.. first times me and a couple of mates were up in port douglas (north of cairns, QLD, AUS) and decided we wanted to try. It was easy as shit. me and old mate went down to the marina and just sat there smoking and staring at fish becuase the gate was locked. then this bloke came over and enquired as to what e were doing, I told him what the go was, and we talked for a bit. it turned out we grew up in the the same small as town and. he said he'd take us out if we just got our own food, learnt how to sail while we were onboard and cooked. so we dumpstered heaps of food, stole some more, bought some goon, and of we toddled. we ended up being grotty yachties for like 2 weeks and going to all these mean as island and snorkeling, and he constantly got me blazed and tuaght me how to sail.
good on ya Simon!!

second experiance. trying from darwin (Aus) to indoneasia, found a bloke named haggis who said we could ride if we fixed his boat. spent nearly 2 months fixing his riging and puting up a brand new boom and all (learnt shitloads).
then 2 weeks before we were going to leave a cyclone sunk the freshly sea worthied boat.

Trash Barge to Hawaii

I love this thread, but it's looking kinda grim for the Barge...

*Judge cancels Hawaii to Washington garbage shipments until lawsuit ends*

Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 12:01 PM

A federal judge in Washington has issued a preliminary injunction barring shipments of garbage from Honolulu to a landfill near the Columbia River in Washington, making it increasingly unlikely that Hawaiian garbage will be shipped to the mainland.

On Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Edward Shea issued the injunction barring the U.S. Department of Agriculture from permitting the shipments until a lawsuit filed in July by the Yakama Nation and environmental groups is resolved.

A Seattle contractor, Hawaiian Waste Systems, had won USDA approval to ship up to 150,000 tons a year of baled and plastic-wrapped Honolulu garbage up the Columbia Gorge to the Roosevelt Regional Landfill in Klickitat County. The USDA withdrew approval in mid-August, saying it needed to conduct further study.

But Shea wrote that the Yakama, Friends of the Columbia Gorge and other groups are "likely" to win their argument that the USDA failed to adequately analyze the environmental impacts of the shipments. Those impacts include the potential introduction of invasive insects and plants to the Northwest.

"(T)here are serious questions relating to whether the (USDA) sufficiently analyzed the impacts that the shipment of Hawaiian garbage will have on the affected Northwest area, including the ports, routes of train or truck travel, and the Roosevelt Landfill," Shea wrote.

Honolulu, strapped for landfill space, is expanding a trash burning plant and considering adding more landfills. But expansion could take years, and plaintiffs in the U.S. lawsuit say they want to stave off any renewed effort to ship trash.

If you look up online hot air balloonists in your area find a number to get a ride and instead ask the pilot if you can help them crew. Then you can help them set up the balloons and take them down and learn a little bit about them and then get into piloting. Hot air balloons are a bitch though. I've been working with them for about 7 years and it takes a lot of people to get them up and take them down. And the you have to be careful of so many things, like the weather, if it's too hot, or to windy, or not windy enough, or if the wind is heading the wrong direction. And landing is a pain too. You have to find a huge spot for them, I don't know if you've ever been close to one but they are HUGE. And you don’t want them snagging on trees or anything. So if you really want to think about investing in it I would recommend you start doing some crewing.

I've always liked traveling by foot. Call it walking, hiking, tramping, trekking, or whatever, it's the most natural way for a human being to travel.

I prefer to go alone though. It seems like when you have a partner they're either slower or faster or have a blister, and you never hit your stride. But when you're alone your body soon finds its natural rhythm and speed, you fall into a trance, and the miles just fall away.

Mountain roads suck though. I don't care what the maps say, it seems you always end up with short line-of-sight and no shoulder, jumping over guardrails with a 500 foot drop below to avoid getting hit, and not even any place wide enough for a car to pull over if you stick out your thumb....
